Your Appearance DOES Matter
By Tammy | February 4, 2008
It’s easy to use the excuse that your appearance doesn’t really matter, it’s your heart and mind that counts, so why try? Here’s why:
“Like it or not, the way you appear says something about you. This is the first impression that others receive. Are your clothes giving out a positive message? People cannot look inside your head to see the confident, warm, creative, sexy, adventurous woman hiding beneath that frumpy, tired, boring, or just-plain-scary exterior. If you met a friend for dinner and she hadn’t bothered to get out of her track suit, brush her hair, or put on any makeup, it may be that she was feeling down in the dumps and tired, but you might equally suspect that she just didn’t think that you were worth the effort. Presenting yourself appropriately and with elan is a gift you give to others, in much the same way that you might give them flowers. You wouldn’t dream of presenting a friend with a bouquet of wilting blooms.” excerpt from Trinny and Susannah Take on America: What your clothes say about you. Trinny Woodall and Susannah Constantine.
Think about that this week. Determine if what you are “saying” about yourself through your appearance is a positive thing. If not, take some steps to change it!

My husband and I were just talking about this today. As much as we want to believe that people look in our hearts, the reality is that people judge our personality, our success, and our kindness by how we look.

I couldn’t agree more! When we take the time to look pretty (or even just clean!), we send a message to both ourselves and the world that we matter. That sentiment trickles down into everything we do, from child-rearing to being a part of the community. I know when I look good, I feel confident and unstoppable, and am more likely to take risks. Go, mamas!

This is a major thing for me right now. I have a 9 month old and a 2 1/2 year old and I let myself get tired and frumpy. And I felt awful. So I have been making a concerted effort to wear makeup daily (even if only the family is going to see me) and dressing nicer. I’d love to dress really nice but I do have those two babies and one is still nursing so I have some limitations. But nice jeans, a top that fits and cute shoes can work wonders too. And I do think that people treat you better when you look better.
