Here’s an interesting tidbit: Did you know that Truman Capote is credited with popularizing the little black dress in the 60’s? In 1966, he threw the “Black and White Ball.” The dress code was as simple as the title and exceptions were not made. A standard for the perfect black dress was set and designers have recreated it constantly since.
Why do we need LBDs? Here are 4 great reasons from Colin:
1. Black is flattering for all sizes, shapes and skin tones. No matter who you are there is a LBD out there for you! Take the time to find one that makes you feel great and fits you properly.
2. You can wear black any time, during any season and to most events. The LBD is chic, classic and sexy all rolled into one. It’s the perfect dress to be worn for a night out on the town or as a cover up at the beach.
3. You can wear this dress a dozen different ways. Jazz it up for evening with a beautiful beaded bolero or tone it down with flats and a wrist full of bangles. If you would like to wear it to work layer a cardigan sweater or blazer for a more refined look.
4. Last but not least: one of these dresses is never enough. Have a few versions on hand that can work with the rest of your wardrobe.

I own two, one which I wore to see “Wicked” in Chicago on New Years eve, followed by a fancy dinner at a dress-code-required restaurant. The other one is a recent purchase but its absolutely adorable and although I’m planning to wear it to a friend’s wedding with a pretty colored crop cardigan over it, I’m looking forward to any other excuse I can find to pull it out of the closet!

I think I own nine. Of course,I don’t fit into all nine at once. They come in assorted sizes. The last time I wore one of them was to a retirement party about a month ago.
I only have one and I bought it yesterday for a funeral. When I got it home though I decided I hated it and ended up wearing a brown dress!

Only one — to a wedding a few weeks ago!
I have two LBD’s in my closet. One is definitely a holiday or evening event LBD. The other dress is linen and can easily look perfect in the daytime. And, by switching shoes/bag and jewelry looks gorgeous in the evening. I wore the linen dress a few weeks ago to a luncheon.
I have about 10 LBDs, but in my own defense, some of them date back to my teenage years. The LBD is such a classic, you really CAN keep it for a decade and still wear it. I wore a vintage Betsey Johnson LDB to a wedding last Saturday night and got many compliments!

I’ve been nursing or pregnant pretty much non-stop for the past 3 1/2 years so…I have to admit that I don’t currently have any LBDs. I LOVE black (so flattering, so classic, so stylish) and I love wearing dresses, but I haven’t been able to find any dresses that are nursing-friendly, pretty, AND modest. Any suggestions?
P.S. That book looks fun! I love “coffee table” books like that.
Shockingly–I DO NOT own a LBD!! I had one years ago that was a la ‘Jackie O’ and I was so in love with it, but I had to give it to a younger (and skinnier) friend. I know I will never be a size 2 again, so I passed it on. This would be an amazing win for me. I just had my 30th bday, so this is a must have in the closet, I don’t know how I’m living without.
I have four little black dresses – although I used to have more! I especially like wearing them to art openings, and did so just two weeks ago to Cappegio, an art gallery that opened up in my neighborhood!
