Wear Tennis Shoes Every Day? You’re Kidding Me!

    By Tammy | August 27, 2008

At my weekly visit with Dr. Carlson, my new chiropractor, I wore cute little kitten heels in the prettiest pink ever! Not a girly cotton candy kind of pink but a sophisticated dusty rose. So pretty! I just love those shoes! Wouldn’t you just guess that the good doctor had to make a comment about them?

No, he was not admiring them. There was no compliment on color or style. He was telling me that they were bio-mechanically very bad for me to wear. “And so…?” I had to ask. “They are better than flip-flops (which I also frequently wear) and I can’t wear tennis shoes every day!” I said with mock disgust. He said, “Yes, you can. It’s not against the law.”

Well, it’s obvious the good doctor does not know who I am. I set him straight. “It’s against MY law! I am A Mom in Red High Heels!”. He didn’t really laugh. He didn’t really apologize for his error in judgment or style. But he really rolled his eyes. Yeah, I saw it even though I was flat on my back staring at the ceiling. Men!

The irony in all this is that for YEARS before having kids, I wore tennis shoes and ultra casual wear every day. I was a commuting college student studying physical education. Then I had field work student teaching and finally, time in the “classroom” (on the field) with the students for 5 years! When I quit my job just before having my first baby, I swore off tennis shoes and ultra casual. The thought of returning to that makes me cringe even to this day.

Granted, should I return to teaching physical education one day (I won’t), I would be far more stylish with the “Casual Wear” but there is no way to get around those tennis shoes. They should be reserved for exercise alone. (Converse don’t count here but I don’t think Dr. Carlson would consider them supportive footwear either).

I laugh to myself and find the conversation humorous. My husband did too! Migraines? Neck pain? Sorry, you still won’t find me wearing tennis shoes every day! Thanks for the idea though, Doc! ;)

Too funny, I am also a former teacher-special ed. though, so I had to wear comfy flats b/c I was always down on the floor, in “supportive holds” with these kids. I also almost immediately went back to wearing more heels and skirts, which I missed terribly. So I can relate!

Maybe you and the good Doc can come to a compromise…
