Wardrobe Essential: Black Kitten Heels

michelle-obama-vogue-black-dress

Yesterday I shared a little about Oprah’s Fashion Intervention episode that aired on Monday.  One of the wardrobe essentials the style experts recommended on the show, was a pair of kitten heels.  One reader asked for me to clarify what a “Kitten Heel” was.  I think it makes for a great post topic that we can all learn from!

For example, did you know that a kitten heel is technically considered a stiletto?  This classification is due to the kitten heel’s slender shape!  According to Wikipedia, a stiletto heel “is named after the stiletto dagger, the phrase being first recorded in the early 1930s. Stiletto heels may vary in length from 2.5 centimetres (1 inch) to 25 cm (10 inches) or more if a platform sole is used. Stiletto-style heels 5 cm or shorter are called kitten heels“.

In the 1950’s, kitten heels were sometimes referred to as “trainer heels”, as young teens would wear them to get used to wearing high heels. Today, kitten heels are considered fashionable shoes for women of all ages. Creative director of O, The Oprah Magazine, Adam Glassman, says every woman should own a pair! “The 2-inch kitten heel is the easiest thing to wear,” he says. He likens it to a LBD (Little Black Dress), saying every woman needs a pair of little black pump.

The kitten heel still creates a sexy, long-leg illusion that you get from higher heels but you’ll be impressed with the comfort and ease of walking.  You’ll be able to wear kitten heels for hours like you do flats!

With the holiday season fast approaching and parties galore on the horizon, now may be a good time to invest in a pair of black kitten heels that will bring you style and comfort for seasons to come!

I was never a fan of the kitten heel. They look great on some people but my philosophy has always been, go tall or go home!! Plus, you don’t get the same slimming effect with a kitten heel as you do with a 4 inch stiletto!!

I tend to use kitten heels for day wear. I don’t own black as they are too matronly for me! (haha) BUT, do notice that the styles I selected for this feature all have a bit of rock n’ roll edge, which is my style! I think Kitten Heels are great with trousers and wide leg jeans. The two pairs I own are pink and you guessed it, red! :) But, to be fair to the moms who don’t share my personal style, it’s good to feature the options and kitten heels are a great alternative to high heels for those who can’t wear heels for health reasons or fear the fall! Thanks for your input Deidrea!!

  3. That is a beautiful photo of the first lady. I personally prefer kitten heels over the super-high ones because, well, I’m not very good at walking with high heels. haha
