Day 13, Tip 13 for my Glamour Makeover: Wake up prettier!
You have to admit, this tip has you wondering…how does Glamour propose I do nothing but lie there and magically wake up prettier? Beauty sleep is great but how often do I get a full night’s sleep? Pretty much, never! It’s one of the laws of Motherhood Sacrifice. Fortunately, Glamour did come up with some other ways that you are sure to love!
1. Straighten your hair in your sleep. You’re not dreaming—it’s doable! Before bedtime, New York City stylist Takisha Sturdivant—who’s done the likes of Kerry Washington and Brandy—suggests combing antifrizz serum through damp hair. Then, starting on your left side, pull a section of hair to the back, make it taut, pin it with bobby pins and move on to the next section. Continue in this way, wrapping hair around your head section by section, until it’s all up. Tie on a silk scarf, hit the hay, then undo in the morning. Voilà—straight hair!
2. Reduce breakouts. Dab a salicylic acid gel on trouble spots at night to help dissolve breakout-causing gunk. And change your pillowcase once a week, says Elissa J. Lunder, M.D., a dermatologist in Wellesley, Massachusetts. “Hair products can build up on it and lead to clogged pores.”
3. Soften your lips. They don’t produce any oil, so they’re extra-prone to drying out overnight. At bedtime, rub them gently with a damp washcloth to deflake, then apply an intensely moisturizing balm like Aquaphor .
4. Soften your legs too. Slather on a body moisturizer, and sleep in a long-sleeve cotton tee and leggings; the fabric traps moisture, making even cracky elbows totally touchable.
5. Head off frizz Satin sheets may have an image problem (think cheesy movie seduction scenes), but pillowcases made of it cause less friction than cotton ones, so your hair doesn’t get all out of control when you toss and turn. Try Satin Wonders Haircare Pillowcase.
6. Make fine lines around eyes less obvious. Try one of the new skin patches you wear to sleep, like Vichy Meokine Fusio Night Intensive Anti-Wrinkle Corrective System.
7. Avoid A.M. puffiness. One common cause: A too-flat pillow. “Your tissues won’t drain as well, so when you wake up you’ll have fluid retention, especially around the eyes,” explains Karyn Grossman, M.D., a dermatologist with offices in L.A. and New York City. Your head should be above about two inches above heart level. “Stack up two pillows if you need to-I like to put a soft one on top of a firm one, so it won’t sink too much.” And if your pillow’s ancient, replace it! Even fluffier ones can flatten out over time.
Wintertime can be extremely drying to your skin due to cold weather and heaters sucking the moisture from the air. Make sure you use the moisturizer and lip balm as recommended here!
