I don’t buy expensive jewelry. I prefer items that are a bit trendy, a bit funky and a bit unique to the stuffiness of pearls and gems (other than my diamonds, mind you!). Each woman has her own taste in jewelry but we all share the need to care for our jewelry, whether it is expensive, trendy or handmade by our children. So, I went to an expert for advice.
I asked Debra Mitchell, the designer of the coolest jewelry line around, Twisted Silver, to share her jewelry care tips with us:
Jewelry Care; Twisted Silver Style
Wear your jewelry- The best way to keep a piece looking good is to wear it often (with the exception of plated jewelry). Your skin will naturally keep a piece polished and it will add patina to natural metals and stones.
Cleaning:
It sounds simple but all jewelry can benefit from a little warm water bath and mild liquid soap- you can wipe with a soft cloth, or get into tight places with a soft toothbrush. Rinse and dry completely. (When cleaning plated pieces, antiqued, or oxidized pieces preserving the finish is the goal- so no harsh cleaners should ever be used)
Polishing:
Polishing cloths are great and you can buy those at any hardware store
Extreme Polishing: (for rare occasions)
When you need your bling to sparkle (sterling, gold, platinum, copper, even diamonds- not for porous stones or other metals) Tarn-X- it is truly exactly what it says “Wipe & Rinse” By far better than any other polishing method I have ever tried.
Skin reactions to metals:
Is your jewelry leaving dark marks on your skin? In most cases this has nothing to do with quality, but with your own body chemistry reacting to the metal- add a layer of clear fingernail polish to the part that touches your skin.
Avoid:
Keep jewelry away from hairsprays, household cleaners, lotions, perfumes, hot tubs & swimming pools… etc…
Storage:
To keep it dust free and new looking: zip lock bags …But, I personally think jewelry is art and will be admired and worn more if it is out. So I have a little linen covered drywall square on my wall- with hooks on it- this way the pieces stay tangle free, I see what I have at all times to mix and match with the outfit and mood that I am in…And it is a lovely piece of art on my wall!
About Twisted Silver Fabulous and Funky Jewelry:
I am inspired by the unexpected and I am driven to find just the right forgotten elements, and turning them into something entirely new. It fits right in with my practical nature, my love of vintage, and my desire to be eco-friendly.
