The Low Down on Skinny Jeans

Are skinny jeans for moms? Are they really for anyone that has legs larger than a toothpick? While the article to follow is slightly dated, it is still relevant as skinny jeans can still be spotted around town. Find out what I bet you didn’t know about skinny jeans, then decide if they are right for you…

The boot-cut jean is slowly being replaced as the “in” look in denim. Now, there’s the “skinny jean”. But, just what are these “skinny jeans” and who can wear them? The skinny jean fad began in the 1980’s when punk was chic. But, in the 21st century, they are making a comeback. The style has been rocked by stars like Cameron Diaz, Hilary Duff, and model Kate Moss. Notice anything about this group? They are all ultra slim gals.Levis Skinny Jeans

With a name like “skinny jean”, who will these fit? The jeans make the skinny look waif-like and the slim look skinny. What about the average American woman? How will she look in them?

According to some, the skinny on these jeans is that you don’t have to be rail thin to wear them. Here’s how they work. The material used to create this revamped wonder of the world is denim with high nylon content.

The inseam that is normally on the inner thigh side of the jeans is placed more forward in skinny jeans. Along with this, the thigh area has a different shape that gives the thigh a slimmer appearance. Subtle shading in the denim minimizes the look of the hips and the entire leg.

Some brands of skinny jeans have inseams as wide as 37”. This equates to a size 18 on the rack. Since the majority of women tend towards larger clothing sizes, marketing to this group is a smart move.

The nature of the material in the jean makes them quite form fitting. Even though the sizes are appropriate for a cross section of women, the actual body shape of the woman will determine if they think that the jean improves their figure. But, the proof is in the pudding, as they say.

Part of pulling of the look is accessorizing the jean appropriately. Choosing a high heel or tucking them into boots can accentuate the look of the leg. If you don’t want your waist to show, a longer blouse that hangs below the waist will camouflage anything you want to hide.

Are you feeling secure enough to shelve those boot-cut jeans? If you are not, that’s okay. Summer is not yet in full swing and you may decide to give them a look-see later on. Now that the skinny jean has caught on again, it probably isn’t going anywhere for a while.

I’m not a big fan of the skinny jean look. I think it looks best on the ultra-thin and is not particularly flattering on the “average woman” (or the shorter woman). I will definitely stick to my boot cuts and flares.

I’m not either, Stephanie! But, I was surprised to learn that the cut and fabric of skinny jeans was different!
