The Secret to Straight Hair

One of the comments on the current contest (Enter to win a Karmin Titanium Hair Straightener Iron) was this: “It takes me an hour to straighten my hair! I need help.”

I feel her frustration so I know others do as well. How do you get your hair straight in the least amount of time? It’s a question on the mind of many women. Here is what I do:

1. Shower at night. This opens up my schedule by allowing me to let my hair air dry as much as possible. I have thick, curly hair (well, 85% of it is) that takes forever to dry if I blow dry it wet.

2. Allow hair to dry up to 80% dry before blow drying. Rough dry it until just damp.

3. Spray with styling lotion like Bumble and Bumble Styling Lotion. Separate hair, clipping all but the lower portion of hair around nape of neck.

4. Use a large round brush. I like a ceramic brush. Ceramic brushes help ensure even heat distribution, eliminating hot and cold spots on the brush surface during blow drying.

5. Make sure you have a hot blow dryer. It makes all the difference in how quickly and efficiently you can dry your hair. Starting with the bottom section of hair, brush the hair under, pulling from root to end, to smooth as you dry. Turn your wrist for the most effective motion of pulling the brush through your hair.

6. Unclip hair and take the next section down. Reclip top hair. Repeat until hair is completely dry.

7. At this point, I let my hair rest for the night.

8. When I style my hair in the morning, I run the flat iron through it to smooth any bumps from the night and release unwanted volume. I clip my hair and section it off again, like I did while drying. On days that I’m short on time, I just go over my ends and top section of hair.

As with the dryer, you need a high quality flat iron that treats hair well. Titanium seems to be the way to go these days as it provides amazing durability under high heats and offers an even heat distribution. Scratch resistant and extremely durable Titanium is a great benefit for a hair iron that will last you many years. Read the testimony of Erin, owner of My Hairstyling Tools for more information on the Titanium flat iron.

9. Final step, smooth with Brilliantine to calm any fly-aways.

Granted, my style is never as smooth or straight as when my stylist does it but I don’t use as much product as she does on my hair either.  I like to wash every 2 to 3 days for the health of my hair and too much product means I have to wash more frequently.   I think the secret to straight hair is in the blow dry.  If I let my hair dry naturally, it would take me an hour to straighten my hair too!

As a hetero, guy I would never use a straight iron. Except of course, my girlfriends’ Misikko flat iron. Shhh! ;)

    5. I absolutely love my GHD. It is by far the best straightener on the market. They are a little pricey at $300 but they are well worth it. Heats up fast and gives amazing results on all types of hair. I thought I would have boofy, thick wavy hair forever till I was introduced to the GHD. The only downside is mine only lasted 3 years. The cord needed replacing and with a bit of internet research I was able to fix it. The GHD is the ultimate hair styling tool for straightening, curling, flicking anything !!
