Don’t Be So Quick to Chop It Off! Why New Moms Should Fight the Urge to “Go Short”

New Mom with Baby

When you are a new mom you have an uncontrollable urge to cut your hair the minute your leave the hospital! You want to change it up and go low-maintenance. I understand, I’ve been there, done that! The urge comes, in part, from feeling overwhelmed with all the new responsibilities! Even when you are a veteran mom, a new baby adds a load of work to your established routine! Partly, the urge comes from wanting to recapture the sexy you pre-baby! Your body has been through months of changing and now that the little one is here, you are ready to get back to “the way things were”; to prove to the world that a baby won’t steal your style!

You’re right, a baby won’t! My advise? Slow it down and don’t be in such a rush to switch things up! Speaking from experience, chopping off all your hair won’t fill your need to feel sexy again!   Here’s why:

  • Your hormones are raging (your hair is going to fall out anyway due to that) so you should wait until you’ve settled into your new role, figured out how your daily routine is going to flow and if your current style is really going to be a problem.
  • Let’s not forget that a shorter style means more frequent hair cuts…can you bear to be away from Baby every 4 weeks for a good cut?
  • With all you have to do now as mommy, do you really need to relearn how to style your hair?

After a good 6 months you’ll be ready to make a sane, non-hormone induced decision about your hairstyle. You may find that you are perfectly happy with the hair you have and all you needed to do was buy a few swanky hair accessories!

If you still feel the urge to chop it all off then here are some great style options. Inspired by a comment I received from a brand new 17 year old mama, I wanted to find some stylish options that were neither high maintenance nor matronly.

New Mom Kelly commented:
“I’m a new-comer mom and I’m 17 years old, and a full time student. I need a way to do my hair in the mornings without taking a long time. And something she isn’t going to take and try to eat. I’ve had a bob before I was pregnant and hated it. I want something short that I can’t put up or scrunch. Please help me”

I asked hairstylist extraordinaire, Jordana from Dino-Clark Salon in Santa Monica, to recommend some styles for Kelly. We don’t have a photo of Kelly so based on her comment alone, these are the style suggestions:

The key is to maintain simplicity without going “boy short” and losing femininity. Mandy Moore and Gwyneth Paltrow have had cuts like this in the past. A style like Natasha Bedingfield wears here is easy to manage because you can just tuck the long bits behind the ear, and let the back be cute and free, even wavy if that is the natural texture.

Victoria Beckham has had a similar cut, and also this shorter style of hers is also very cute and easy, for straight hair.

One of the most dramatic makeovers this year was Katharine McPhee. Her short cut is easy to style on a daily basis, but playful enough to still be flirty and young.

For a longer, shaggier option, this style worn by Jenna Elfman, is sassy and fun!

Kelly, we wish you a ton of luck! I’m so happy to hear you are still going to school! Let us know how you updated your style!

Veteran Moms, did you cut your hair after you had Baby?

  1. These are gorgeous looks. Unfortunately, living in a tropical country and dealing with mom duties always mean cutting your hair.

Which look do you like the best Meream? Which would be the most functional with the humidity you have?

I didn’t go super short after the kids were born, but I did have to discover different products. Hormones made my hair way more frizzy, and what’s up with those silver streaks that don’t curl at all??? LOL A good styling product makes looking chic in a flash ESSENTIAL. Who has the time to preen in front of a mirror anymore? Great post :)
