Protect Your Family From The Swine Flu
By Tammy | April 29, 2009

In recent days, the news has been filled with stories of the Swine Flu.
Originating in Mexico, this strain of influenza is spreading rapidly in the States. In most cases, the Swine Flu causes only mild symptoms and the infected person makes a full recovery without requiring medical attention and without the use of antiviral medicines. While our healthcare may be more modern than that of Mexico’s it is important for you to take care of yourself and your family in an effort to protect your health against this outbreak.
Steps you can take to protect yourself from the Swine Flu:
- Wash your hands with warm water for the duration of the ABC song. Your little ones will love singing the song and while you “time” the washing, their alphabet knowledge is enforced.
- Pack an anti-bacterial hand sanitizer in your purse or diaper bag and use often. Shopping carts, restroom doors, handrails, money, pens used at the checkout counter all contain the germs of those who have come before you.
- Pack your own pen and use it. As mentioned, the pens handed to you to sign your credit card receipts have been used by many before you. Viruses can survive on surfaces for up to 4 days, according to Dr. Brigit Winther.
- Clean and sanitize areas for diapering, toileting, and eating, as well as toys and furniture. Bring along your own changing table coverlets for diaper changing, shopping cart covers and high chair covers for the little ones.
- Make sure your child’s daycare and school keep their rooms on the cool side. Ask if the room is aired out often. You should be doing this at home as well.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
On the other end of things, if you or your child is not feeling well, please stay home. You don’t want to spread germs to others, do you?
By practicing these preventative tips, we are increasing our chances of avoiding the Swine Flu (or any other kind of illness) and remaining healthy.
