When you hear the word “pompadour”, whose image is called to mind?  Elvis?  James Dean?  John Travolta?  Brad Pitt in Johnny Suede?  Johnny Depp in Crybaby?  Tom Cruise and Emilio Estevez in The Outsiders?  (If you haven’t seen that last one, please see it ASAP. It has every hot guy from the 80’s in it.)

What if I told you that some of the most glamorous women in Hollywood have adapted the pompadour into a stylish, avant garde updo?  Would you dare to wear a hairstyle that extends 2, 4, even 6″ above your hairline?  These divas are rocking it, and I’m just looking for a reason to do so myself!  (Friday?  Does Friday count??)

The pompadour-inspired updo can be as mellow as a little 90’s bump at the front hairline…

…or as tall and couture as you are comfortable with (just make sure it can fit in the car.)

The look evokes images from the 1940’s and 50’s, especially when shown with visible rolls, but it can also form a tall mohawk for more of an 80’s, punk-y look.

For a more modern, boho-chic version, try adding twists and/or braids.  Have short hair?  Just pin it back into a sleeker faux-hawk shape.

The pompadour updo can be abstract and subtle, or defined and  geometric, and since it is done with loads of teasing, hairspray and pins, it is appropriate for pretty much any texture of hair.

So what do you think?  Could you, would you, wear a pomp?  I love it, and am hoping to see some BIG Holiday hair this year in my salon!
