Oscars 2013: Glam Hair Review

The 85th Academy Awards were Sunday night, and you know what that means…more style and glamour inspiration than one evening can handle!  While there are countless gowns, jewels, and accessories I could comment on, I’ll stick to my area of expertise…hair.

This year’s red carpet was loaded with gorgeous hair, from updo’s (both messy and sleek) to vintage waves and accents.  Some of my faves:

Jennifer Lawrence, Best Actress Winner, wore a loose combination of twists and a low bun.  The style was elegant and sophisticated, as both the event and her category called for, but still youthful–she is only 22, after all!  This style would be appropriate for any big event in a young woman’s life, such as Bat Mitzvah, quinceañera, prom, sorority or other formal, or serving as a young bridesmaid. (learn how to create this hairstyle at home!)

Amanda Seyfried is known for wearing her long, thick hair beautifully groomed but almost always down and parted to the side.  She has some of the best hair in Hollywood, and while that style certainly flaunts it, an event such as the Oscars calls for a step up.  Amanda’s stylist jumped ahead several steps, to an intricate yet ethereal updo that must have employed a truckload of bobby pins. Long, thick hair like Amanda’s can be a challenge to pin up, but her Oscar style was a big winner in my book!

Octavia Spencer has mostly been seen with her hair pulled back, or parted and swept away from the face.  Earlier this year, she premiered some new soft bangs, which she wore for the Oscars, along with a full but sleek updo that was fancy and flattering, without being overly formal or matronly (common pitfalls of a sleek updo.)

Kelly Rowland also wore bangs and a sleek updo, but hers was higher on her head, a bit more structured and glossy, and with a more severe bang.  This style is more appropriate to Kelly’s age (10 years younger than Octavia) and face shape/body type.  The style endured, as Kelly hosted on the red carpet, watched the big show, and no doubt hit the party circuit afterwards!

Reese Witherspoon was picture-perfect in a structured, blue Louis Vuitton gown that her daughter Ava helped her choose.  The look was completed with flowing waves, reminiscent of Veronica Lake.  Reese often uses hair extensions to pump up her fine locks, and last night was no exception, but other stars should take note of how Reese’s color and texture blend flawlessly.  Honorable mentions in the final category for Jessica Chastain for her beautifully matched extensions) and Sandra Bullock for her elegant vintage barrette, but their styles just didn’t pop as much as mom of three Resse Witherspoon.  If you’re going to wear your hair down for a formal event, this is how to do it!

  1. I think that Naomi Watts absolutely killed it with her dress. Just perfection. Not getting what wasn’t to love about it. I loved Zoe Saldana and Nicole Kidmans dresses but in my opinion it was Naomi by a mile. I also loved how Kristin Stewart was a hot mess, and Jennifer Lawrence looked terrific even falling over.

    Jessica Chastian just glows. I don’t know how she does it. That Alexander McQueen gown just brought back class to Hollywood.

    @Grace Jessica did look stunning!
