I must say, Nicole Richie is pulling of being a brunette in an absolutely beautiful way! In the March issue of British Marie Claire, Nicole looks healthy, seductive and stunning. Not many people can pull off this drastic change as effortlessly as she has!
If you get adventurous and want to copy her look, keep these tips in mind:
- Hair color fades and loses the rich hue between color treatments. Use a color-enhancing conditioners that will help prevent color fading.
- Color-treated hair can become dry and brittle. Use a deep conditioner weekly.
- Use a shampoo that is sulfate-free and safe for color treated hair. L’Oreal EverPure Shampoo is a great budget-friendly option.
- Select a darker hue that compliments your natural skin tone and eye color so you don’t look washed out. If you have fair skin, you should stick to the warmer browns. Medium skin tones look best in chestnut shades of brunette hair color. Dark skin tones can wear the beautiful rich sable or chocolate browns.
- Ask for well placed highlights around your face to give you a natural look while brightening your face.
- When you are unsure about going darker, go slowly. Opt for a few darker lowlights around your face before going brunette all over. Or, try a virtual makeover that will give you a visual and an overall idea of what your new look would be.
- Change your current clothing and makeup color scheme. Darker hair works best with darker and richer fabrics.
When I change my hair color to a darker shade I either a) freak out and proceed to wash it with baking soda to pull out some of the semi-permanent color or b) reserve judgment for 2 weeks until I am either used to it or it has started to lighten with washing. I want to like being a brunette, I really do…brunettes look so sultry and sophisticated but that’s a role I need to let go of trying to acheive and leave it to the Nicole Richies of the world (and maybe you??).
