I think it’s pretty rare for a color specialist to tell a potential client that she DOESN’T need to change her hair color. Not even one bit. That’s what happened when Crystal, mom of 2, asked Neil and Amanda for some hair makeover advice! Lucky girl, she was born with the gorgeous color that is absolutely perfect for her!
Crystal says:
I’m looking for advice on what to do with my hair. I’m currently trying to do my own mommy makeover because I’ll be heading back to work as a substitute teacher in June after being on maternity leave. I have changed hair colors in the past, gone lighter and darker, but have not had any dye hit my hair in about 6 years. My hair texture is quite straight, although after the birth of my first child a little wave developed in the back (probably from the ponytails). My hair is also quite fine, but according to my hair dressers I have a ton of it. With two children under the age of three I am definitely challenged with time, and lack of styling expertise. I am willing to change my color, but would like to stay close to natural, and prefer longer styles (below chin). Any help/advice/styling how to’s you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.
Crystal
A Mom in Red High Heels’ Beauty Task Force members and owners of the Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills answer Crystals inquiry:
Neil says:
Keep it simple especially if you like the length- just a few soft face framing layers to give you a fresher look. Get a large round brush and a flat iron and blowdry/flat iron so it’s long and smooth.
Amanda says:
Do not color your hair! If that’s your natural in the picture, it’s beautiful and you should not put a thing on it! If you want a little something to perk it up though, you can go and have a gloss applied at a hair salon- and you can do one to match your natural color, or a clear one for shine. It will make your hair super glossy and shiny. If you have amazing natural color, it shouldn’t be touched until it absolutely must! For instance, Goldie Hawn has NEVER colored her hair in her whole life! Good luck!
A Mom in Red High Heels says:
Crystal, I think this Heidi Klum style would look excellent on you and give you the polished look you desire! Your hair would only need some reshaping and a few front layers, like Neil suggested, to acheive this look. Plus, it’s still long enough to pull back in a variety of ways, which you’ll appreciate since you have 2 little ones!
Admittedly, I’m a little jealous of Amanda’s response to you, Crystal! I hope you take it to heart and don’t change your color! Let us know what you decide to do with your hair!

Wow guys, thanks, I’m truly flattered that you like my colour, it runs in my family on my Dad’s side, and both my son and daughter look like they inherited it, and my complexion too. It’s nice to have a professional say they like it too…usually they want to get dye in there somehow.
As for the cut, I like it! I’ll be printing it out for my next haircut, which should be very soon, and I’ll be buying a straightener as well. I’ll send in a photo when it’s done if you like.
Glad you like the cut, Crystal! I think it will look fantastic, just enough of a change to help you feel “new” for the next phase of life! Can’t wait to see the outcome
