Looking for a Modern, Low Maintenance Hairstyle? Try This Meg Ryan-Meets-Keri Russell Style!

Moms complain of “boring hair” all too often, don’t they? It’s time to make a cut and go for something sexy with movement! Check out this style recommendation that’s a cross between the famous Meg Ryan do and a modern Keri Russell style!

New mom Sharron is ready for a new fabulous look:

“I just found your blog and thought I’d send in my pic to see what you might have to say about possible new hairstyles. . .

I’m a 39-year old mama to a lovely little 6.5 month old boy and am ready for a new do. Had super-short hair much of my life. Have loved growing it out over the past couple of years, but now that I’m no longer pregnant, it just looks boring. So, I’m wanting to go for some kind of Meg Ryan-ish layered short-ish look. Baby loves to pull my hair, and it takes forever to wash and dry. I usually wear glasses and am not willing to do a lot of maintenance or color.

Looking forward to hearing your ideas?!
Sharron”

I turned to the expert advice of the Neil and Amanda, co-owners of the Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills, who are an important part of the Beauty Task Force on A Mom in Red High Heels. They offer their recommendations to Sharron.

Neil says:

Well you’re definitely on the right track- the famous Meg Ryan ‘do with a bit of an update. Maybe just a bit longer than the Meg cut as well, to make it more modern, with some great layers too. Make sure to keep lots of texture in the cut, you want the cut to have more swing than to be more choppy.

Amanda:
If you want to stay low maintenance, avoid coloring anything straight at the roots. Keep a nice natural brown for your base, and just give yourself some lighter soft golden brown tips, similar to Keri Russell’s (but on shorter hair of course). If you keep your color just on your ends, you will never have roots!

Sharron, the stylist that colors my hair has been after me to try a color similar to this since it is lower maintenance. I was afraid I’d just look like I had grown-out roots but I really like the way Keri’s color looks. Maybe I’ll take her up on it next time. How about you? Are you ready for the change?

    1. She will look pretty with that hair style :) The coloring idea is fab, too :)

For the record, it seems to me that lighter color just on the ends like Keri’s is even more natural looking than one might think… I haven’t colored my hair in several years but have natural highlights, and as I’ve been growing my hair out the past few years I’ve noticed the roots look darker than the rest. I assume this is because the sun has highlighted it more over time. Just an observation I thought I’d share :-)
