Meet Tracy Hutson, Author and Designer

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and interview Tracy Hutson, a designer for Extreme Makeover Home Edition and author of Feathering the Nest, a couple of weeks ago at the Baby & Tween Celebration LA pre-event at The Grove LA. She is super sweet, energetic and claims to be a very low-maintenance mommy. Her favorite lipgloss is from Target and she loves her ballet flats! Find out what other beauty and fashion tips she has for us:

Tracy Hutson
Your Name: Tracy Hutson

How many children do you have?
Two Boys, ages 16 months and 3 (almost 4!)

Your Job: I am one of the designers on Extreme Makeover Home Edition and author of Feathering the Nest.

What is your favorite beauty tip? Baby wipes! I use them to remove makeup, wipe my hands clean, wipe the boys…they are so useful! I never leave the house without concealer, mascara and lip gloss. I bring my toothbrush with me everywhere!

You went from blonde to red and back again. Tell us about that! After I had my first baby, I did what a lot of new moms do and wanted something different so I went a dark red. I’m really a low-maintenance girl so I eventually went back to blonde as it’s easier on the upkeep!

What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion? My mom is a huge roll model to me. She was a single mom but she always had her hair done! She taught me that I should take time each day just for me.

What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why? Jeans, white v-neck tee and ballet flats! I wear the same jewelry all the time: diamond stud earrings, a feather necklace from Barry (her husband is actor Barry Watson) that is adorned with diamonds and an “inside out ring” by Holly Riddel Designs.

* The inside out ring is a symbolic ring that is a reminder that “It’s what’s on the inside that counts”. Tracy is a huge advocate for teenage girls and supports them in finding self-confidence in who they are.

What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion? Net-a-Porter

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips? Multi-tasking products!

Name one product you can’t live without: Creme de la Mer

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair. I love heels but I wear ballet flats most of the time.

What has been your worst fashion faux pas? In high school I wore huge overalls with half-shirts under them! Ugh! My mom still reminds me of that!

Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Which brand/color? Lipgloss! I like Neutrogena MoistureShine® Lip Soother because it feels great and I can get it at Target!

Give us a tip or two from your book, Feathering the Nest, that anyone could incorporate into their nursery: Don’t follow trends!  Find a nice piece of art work that you can center the design around and continue to use it in the child’s room as he grows.  Also, repurpose the furniture you already have!  Use a dresser from another room, refurnish it and add a changing pad to the top of it!  You can do the same (refinish) with a coffee table or chair.

She’s so beautiful (as are you). I love how low-maintenance her beauty routine is.

P.S. I remember that oversized overalls trend. Fortunately, my parents never allowed me to wear half-shirts. But I did have a pair or two of overalls in my teen years! Ug.

    2. Tammy says:

Oh yes, I did the oversize overalls as well. She and I had a good laugh about them!!
