When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?
I’m a divorced mom, so I couldn’t have done it when my kiddo was younger. Now that I have a *gasp* teenager, it’s more do-able, but I still have to say “no” a lot and make sure I spend my time on my priorities: family first, business second, me third, my friends and obligations come next. That is to say… I don’t cook or clean often, and I just don’t get out much!
What is your favorite beauty tip?
With cosmetics and fashion: enhance your best features. And in general: let your true, inner beauty shine through.
What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion?
See above. And in her case, it was easy. My mother is a natural beauty from head to toe. She rarely wears makeup and I grew up admiring how her radiance and natural features alone were enough to make her stunningly beautiful. She always looked (and still looks) more beautiful without makeup on than with.
What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why?
My Michael Kors jeans, Banana Republic classic button-down white shirt with heels. Fast, versatile, comfortable.
What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?
I really like Origins cosmetics, but I’m also trying out various mineral makeup brands to carry at Maternitique.
What motivates you to look your best?
Beauty should be celebrated and enjoyed and appreciated in all its diversity. There are so many harsh things about the world, but taking time to appreciate the beauty of a sunset, the flowers blooming, and the beauty of smiling friends and family—that’s what life is all about.
As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?
- Have an easy, low-maintenance hair style.
- Sleep well, take vitamins and drink water throughout the day.
- Use baby shampoo or baby body wash instead of a special brush cleaner.
- Avoid dry clean only and hand wash only clothing! Buy clothing you can toss in the washing machine, for heaven’s sake, and use a lingerie bag for the washing machine, too.
- Some days I just apply a tinted eye shadow base and mascara instead of base, shadow, liner, and mascara.
Name one beauty product you can’t live without:
Concealer. I’m using an opaque mineral concealer that I like a lot. I had my doubts about the kind of coverage I’d get switching from a liquid-only to a powder, but I’ve been impressed. I’ll tell you the brand after I start carrying it at my store.
Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.
I’ve always been a flats sort of gal, due to my height. And I’m sure you’re not going to like this answer, but I really don’t have a favorite at the moment. I’m sort of disgusted by all of my shoes, but too busy to do anything about it. I wish there were a shoe fairy who could just deliver to my door about two dozen pairs that all fit perfectly, felt great and went with everything. Is that too much to ask?
What has been your worst fashion faux pas?
Wearing pants too short for me! I’m about 6’ tall, so I’ve had my share of unflattering jeans and pants.
Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Do you have a favorite brand/color?
Both! My favorite lip sticks are from Pur minerals (Mauve Quartz) and Origins. I use one as a base, then top with Neutrogena Moisture Shine Gloss (Dreamy) or L’Oreal Bare Naturale mineral lip gloss (Soft Mauve) for extra shine. I guess I like mauves; I do wear red lipstick, though, when I’m pulling out all the stops.
Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share:
One of our mottos at Maternitique is “Motherhood is beautiful,” and what we mean isn’t that motherhood is glamorous or stylish, but mothering is a beautiful thing! I truly believe that as mothers, women deserve to celebrate our bodies, our femininity and our beautiful, life-giving curves. I’m all in favor of cosmetics, jewelry and clothing that dignify and honor maternal beauty.

Hi Tara! So nice to meet you!
I agree about steering clear of dry clean and hand wash only clothes. They’re way more work than they are worth.
P.S. Can you send the shoe fairy my way after she visits your house?
Hi Stephanie! Good to “see” you again
I’ve missed your Tuesday comments! Hope you are well!
