When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?
I work at my computer or in my studio from the second I come back in the house from dropping off my son until I go pick him up from school. More recently, he’s starting Lacrosse, so he’s got longer days…but that means I’ll be attending all the home games as well! Between that and his clarinet lessons and soccer and drivers ed..well, let’s just say, I’ll need to remember to look at my calendar more often!

What is your favorite beauty tip?
All through my younger years, I had “big hair” even in my 20’s my old boss used to declare, “Here comes the big hair!” This wasn’t due to a weird hairstyle, I just have every kind of hair you can imagine, from fine to wavy to coarse to kinky. It’s the Greek in me I suppose! So…I think the greatest invention is the flat iron. I LOVE my flat iron. I feel so sleek, crisp, more fashionable and even clean when I have FLAT hair! I also love DesignLine flat iron spray by Regis. I know Regis has mall stores, but I purchase mine at hello…WAL-MART! (at their hair “salon”) It is a miracle drug for my psycho hair. I’m Rosanna Rosanna Danna without it and my flat iron!

What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion?
OY!! She’s still on my back!
1. You can’t be comfortable all the time! (fashion can be painful..esp.on the feet!)
2. Wear lipstick
3. Why aren’t you wearing lipstick?
4. It’s got to have class.
5. You like that? It’s so old lady! (with any floral print this was said.)
6. It’s about time you lost weight!
7. Mom’s always had lovely jewelry.. some handed down to me and others I wish I had right now!

What beauty/fashion tips will you be sure to share with your daughter, niece or neighbor girl as she grows?
When you look good, you feel good and want to do well and people actually look at you differently. And that great pair of heels will get you feeling sexier than you can imagine.

What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why?
Black slacks with a black blouse and this fabulous off brand nubby short jacket with turquoise, orange, green and blue and black in the nubs. It’s soooo cute and warm when I need warmth, like always!

What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?
Did I mention that Mom is also frivolous? Yes, I got that from her as well. Therefore, I really don’t shop online. I need to feel the material, see how it fits because if I don’t, I won’t send it back and it would be a waste of money if the item didn’t fit.

What motivates you to look your best?
That sort of confidence you get when you’re walking along and you might feel some wandering eyes lingering a little longer than they ought to at..oh! Is it moi?

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?
For me, because of how thick my hair is, I wash it the night before.. it’s even flatter when I awake!

Name one product you can’t live without:
My over the counter (again with the frivolous!!) Physicians Formula Gentle Cover Concealer in Yellow. These darned dark circles are taking over my face the older I get!

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.
My rural life requires flats or athletic shoes (taupe and orange Saucony’s), my old Chicago lifestyle required heels…on those special occasions! My black 3” heels my husband made me buy one day we went shopping.

What has been your worst fashion faux pas?
I have two. About a month before my first wedding, I chopped off my hair. It was horrid! It would have been so much prettier if it was long for the wedding.

The other-  Getting lazy and wearing sweats and sweat shirts out on errands. I feel like Clayton Kelly and Stacy London are taping me!

Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Which brand/color?
I wear, when my mom’s around anyway, Almay Pure Blends Lipgloss in Fig #170. I feel it’s perfect with any outfit, and goes great with my makeup. It’s neutral but gives depth.

Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share:
You can look cute and have a busy Mom’s lifestyle simultaneously. It just takes a few more minutes a day to figure out what works and what does not.

Editor’s Note:  Susie, your answers are so refreshing and your personality just shines through in them!  No wonder your products are so fun and vibrant, they are just like you!

I’m sorry you had visions of chic short hair a week before your wedding!  I did a similar thing while pregnant with my first child…horrid, as you say!

Please check out SooBoo Designs!  If you love stationary and small personalized items, you will love this website!  I recommend the Personalized Diaper Bag Tags (also great for luggage and backpacks!) and the Personalized Notepads for Mother’s Day, graduation and end-of-the-year teacher gifts!  So special, affordable and unique!

I disagree with Designline flat iron spray, it dried out my hair really bad and makes it impossible to comb through. I like their gel for taming unruly flyaways though.

    Hi Cindy,
Thanks for sharing your opinion as it is empowering for us all to hear your experience!

I am finding that there are very few, if any, products that work for all women. I laugh sometimes when I get a product review from one of the moms on the Mom Panel because their opinion on the product is the complete opposite of mine!

    Thanks for chiming in!

Thank you so much for putting my profile up so soon. It was a real treat to see my shop in lights! Thanks for your editor’s note as well. These days, I need a bit o sunshine. (My standard poodles gone blind and we’re hoping it’s reversible but won’t know for a few days!)
I’m sorry to hear that Cindy disagrees about the flat iron spray. Maybe it doesnt dry mine out cuz I use the Designline Silk Drops Repair & Shine Serum? I little dab’ll do ya! Remember that line anyone?
Hope your LA extravaganza was successful! I just read about it.

  4. This was a very pleasant and enjoyable interview to read. Susie you seem to be a fun and down to earth person. Btw, I think we may be sisters–I have big hair but keep it shorter with layers–it looks good because now the natural curls can stand out quite well–also, your mom sounds alot like mine–LOL!

    Hey Margo!
Saw you on We Love Artfire as well! Sista’s! Yes.. I hardly meet anyone with this thick ick hair! My last hair cut was with some bottom layers and I have decided, along w/my husband that I don’t like what it does.. I don’t like the way it lays, lies, whatever it is.. It might be good for when I leave it curly (NEVER!!) but otherwise when i straighten it is looks sorta just dumb. BUT I did get the grays covered and I finally like that. I just couldn’t ever wrap my mind around covering the gray. Not too bad!
    no gray temples now.. yay!
see you in the artfire forums!
