How many children do you have? I have two teenage girls, ages 16 and 18.
Your Business Name: Primitive Makeup, Inc.
Brief Description of Your Business: We are an all natural makeup company.
When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule? I usually work while my kids are at school; or when I can’t sleep, like now, writing this at 5AM. It’s a little easier now that my kids are older, and they don’t need me around the house as much as they did when they were little.
What is your favorite beauty tip? Always wear sunglasses when you are out in the sun; it prevents wrinkles around the eyes and will keep you looking 10 years younger!
What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion? LOTS! Both my mom and my grandmother always looked impeccable before leaving the house. They taught me to wear what looks well on me, not just what’s in style.
What beauty/fashion tips will you be sure to share with your daughter, niece or neighbor girl as she grows? I try to teach my girls to wear what flatters them. But I also want them to wear what makes them feel good about themselves. It’s usually the same thing! Also, makeup and clothing can be a tool, to help us feel our best. Its cliché, but true, that when you look good, you feel good.
What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why? I have a pretty casual style, living in the country (Woodstock, NY), but I love to put on jeans and high heels.
What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion? I check in with bluefly.com frequently.
What motivates you to look your best? I feel good when I take the time to do my hair, put on makeup, look pulled-together. And it makes me feel like a woman, not just a mom. I make sure to look good when I go out with my husband; he seems to appreciate it too!
As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips? Hmm, that’s a tough one; I guess multitasking is the most time saving thing I do; I condition my hair while shaving my legs in the shower, that sort of thing.
Name one product you can’t live without: My Primitive Lipstick!
Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair. I love when I get the chance to put on heels. Currently I am in love with these great brown Mary Jane wedges by bcbg. But my favorite pair changes frequently!
Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Which brand/color? Definitely lipstick. I never leave the house without it! Primitive Lipstick in Sahara (a sheer, natural pink) is my go-to every day color.
Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share: It’s really important, as a mom, to take care of yourself too, not just your family. I exercise, eat right, work, and take time to hang out with friends because if I can feel good about me, then I give my kids a happy mom!
Editor’s Note: Nancy and Primitive Makeup is one of the mom-owned companies that I featured on It’s Mom’s Nite a few weeks ago. She and her business partner Susanna have an amazing line of natural lipstick that is truly as good as the synthetic brands but so much better for you! You won’t be disappointed in the lipstick if you try it!
Nancy, I love your comment about how you are motivated to look your best because it makes you feel like a woman, not just a mom. It’s a message that needs sharing with every mom- thanks for your input on it! You and your daughters are GORGEOUS! Oh, how I love all those curls!! Thank you for sharing your fashion and beauty tips with us!
Readers: If you made it to the end of this interview, congratulations! Love the idea of a gold shimmer–pick me, pick me!
I’m from India and would love a lipstick color called Taj Mahal! Plus it sounds really pretty and the Nancy sounds like a great mom and business owner!
