Meet Carrie Cavender of Hollywood Backwash.com

    By Tammy | June 10, 2008

    Your Name: Carrie Cavender

How many children do you have? One 2 year old son, Jackson

    Your Business Name:HollywoodBackwash.com

    Brief Description of Your Business:

An up to the minute celebrity gossip website, featuring celebrity fashion, fitness and beauty tips as well as other celebrity hi-jinks.

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?

Although my laptop stays close to me all day, the majority of my work is done first thing in the morning while my son watches cartoons, during naptime and late at night after he finally goes down for the night. It’s not unusual for me to work until 2am and then be up at 8am with the boy.

What is your favorite beauty tip?

    • Use an inexpensive exfoliator like St. Ives on your whole body, not just your face.
    • Using body oil/baby oil on top of lotion give your skin a soft sheen.
    • Shave with cheap hair conditioner instead of shaving crème, leaves your legs silky smooth.
    • If you can stand the taste, baking soda mixed with toothpaste really does whiten your teeth.
    • And of course drinking lots of water and getting enough sleep.
    • A great smelling lotion can be used on pulse points instead of perfume.
    • Keep a small tube of Aquaphor with you at all times for lip gloss in a pinch, dry cuticles, chapped lips or bits of dry skin.

What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion? My Mom taught me how to shop off-season and how to mix-and-match your wardrobe. I was mixing my mom’s work blazers with giant shoulder pads with my parachute pants way back in the day. Thank goodness I don’t have the parachute pants anymore, but I still mix high-end with low-end/dress and casual on a daily basis. It always gives a pulled together appearance without looking like you’ve tried too hard. But hands down the best lesson I ever learned from my Mother was that a kind heart is the most beautiful thing in the world.

What beauty/fashion tips will you be sure to share with your daughter, niece or neighbor girl as she grows?
    • Being yourself, embrace your own quirks and don’t conform to other people’s ideas of beauty or what’s en vogue.
    • Dress Your Age!!

What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why?
    • Pencil skirts/Bermuda shorts with a flirty sleeveless trapeze top topped off with edgy wedges and jewelry.
    • Faux wrap dresses

What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?
    NY& Co.com, JCrew, Old Navy, Macy’s, Forever 21, Kohls, Sephora, Etsy.com, Ebay, Piperlime.com and AmericanApparel.net.

What motivates you to look your best? My family! I strive to be the person my husband and son think I am, inside and out.

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?

    • I am the Queen of multi-tasking; I file my nails at red lights, do cuticle treatments while waiting at the doctors office, etc.
    • In the morning I put five jumbo hot rollers in my hair and leave in just for the time that it takes to put on my make-up. Takes much less time than a straight blow-out or using the flatiron.
    • I get my next day’s outfit out ready every night before I go to bed. My son’s as well.
    • I keep my closet organized by type of clothing, then light to dark. Big time saver when you are looking for that black t-shirt.
    • Keeping your make-up/hair styling tools organized saves more time than you think.
    • I use tinted lip balm for my day gloss. No mirror needed to apply.
    • I keep a notebook with a pen in my bag at all times to make grocery lists, to do lists, etc. in case I find myself in a long bank line.
    • I schedule all my “maintenance” at one time. Hair cut, highlights, waxing, pedicures…all in one day. If I tell my salon that I’m in a rush they give me back to back appointments with no time wasted in between. I’ve even had a wax/pedi while my color was processing. One trip, one babysitter.

Name one product you can’t live without:
Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer – seriously couldn’t live without it

Nars The Multiple – gorgeous color to use everywhere

Benefit Eye Bright – wakes up your eyes even if you are half asleep

Aveda Hand Relief- yummy lime smell.

    • Eye brow comb but use to elongate and separate my eyelashes

Neutrogena Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream; Intensive Deep Wrinkle Treatment

Neutrogena Moisture Shine Tinted Lip Balm in Pure

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.

    • I am all about the wedge heel! But at home it’s all about flip-flops. I’ve also been known to stick a pair of jeweled flips into my diaper bag just in case I can’t make it through my daily errands in my wedges.
    • Caramel brown wedges that go with everything.

Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Which brand/color? Lip gloss.

Revlon SuperLustrous Lip Gloss in Cherries in the Snow

Stila Lip Glaze in Brown Sugar

Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share:

Don’t get caught too caught up in fashion trends. Skinny jeans and skull prints aren’t for everyone. Find your true style and evolve from there. Stick to what looks and feels good on you. Only keep things in your closet that fit well and make you feel like a million bucks. Throw everything else out. If your clothes and beauty products are kept organized and tidy, even the busiest of Mom’s can look fabulous in 30 minutes. Looking and feeling good are vital to our self-esteem; which in turn reflects on our relationships, how we raise our kids, and how successful and happy we are in all aspects of our lives. Viva la femme!

Editor’s Note: Carrie! THANK YOU so much for the many recommendations! What a treat to hear what you are using! (BTW, readers, the Revlon Lip Gloss, pictured above, now comes with SPF 15…perfect for a summer gloss!) Your time saving tips are great! Moms, pack the cuticle cream and do what Carrie does while she waits for an appointment. Nothing like a little cuticle-love while you wait!

Be sure to check out Carrie’s website! You’ve got to know that if her interview is this detailed, she’s sure to get the FULL scoop on celebrity gossip!

So, I think that I may have found my newest guilty pleasure! I am such a sucker for a good Hollywood gossip site. Also, loved Holly’s comments on skinny jeans, etc. You really do have to wear what works for you and not get too caught up in what those stars are wearing–as much as we looooove to look them in it!
