LA Fashion Week- Who Are You Wearing?

Yesterday I attended the official kick-off of the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios. As with any event that I’ve never attended, I wasn’t sure what to wear. Do I go ultra-trendy (it is fashion week for goodness sakes!) or more casual since this is LA we are talking about. Should I dress in professional attire as I am representing my blog and Total Beauty? I called on fellow beauty blogger, Erika, as she went to New York Fashion week and has had more time in the industry than I. Her answer? “OMG the whole dressing thing is always an issue! I can’t compete with the NY fashionistas so I just dress as I would for work (with more comfortable shoes, as I’m always running around). Also, I hear LA is much more laid back than New York.” OK, so professional, comfortable and, of course, fashionable!

Since my “stay-at-home-blogging-mom budget” (non-existent) does not allow for the designer price tag and my “busy-mom-trying-to-get-her-family’s-house-on-the-market” schedule did not allow for drive-to-the-mall to shop time, I was forced to check out the buys at the local Target and Kohl’s, which is pretty much all we have in town. Now, I like Target and occasionally Kohl’s has a decent buy but it wasn’t where I wanted to pick out my fashion week (even though I was only attending for the day) outfit but I think in the end, I did OK. I felt cute and comfortable. I looked professional and casual enough for the LA scene (which is what I am used to being in So Cal…not sure how the New York scene “dresses up” so much every day!).

Here is what I wore:

A My Michelle Lantern Sleeve jacket in a dark tan shade. Super cute! It has a little ruffle detail that is so in this season. Had I worn it buttoned closed, it would have given a more tailored look but I wanted my necklace to show (see below). It will look great with jeans, too! Of course, it’s not available online to show you so you’ll have to check out my picture below. There are several cute and totally affordable My Michelle pieces online at Kohl’s- check them out!

Brown capri pants by Tempted Hearts, also at Kohl’s.

A red v-neck tee. Layering is essential for fashion shows. It’s so hot in the tents! I love the pop of color the tee added to the outfit!

Villanelle 5-ring necklace by VerseNYC in Ivory. I love this statement necklace! I wasn’t sure which earrings to wear with it as most of my earrings are large and I didn’t want them getting the attention that the necklace deserved! I emailed Verse owner and designer, Heather and asked her opinion (see? I ask lots of questions to learn how to do it right!). She recommended pearls or small gold balls. I had neither so I wore my diamond studs.

Merona wedge sandals in red! (Of course, red…I was going representing A Mom in Red High Heels!!) These were bought at Target last spring. I get a lot of wear out of them! I love the color and the heel is about 3 inches but very comfortable and walkable as it is a wedge.

Tammy’s Fashion Week Outfit

In the end, I was dressed just right. Many attendees were dressed-up more but most of the press people were more casual than I so I felt fine. My feet never hurt and I wasn’t distracted by my outfit (having to pull at or straighten it out) which is what a good outfit should do for you. I was able to focus on my time there and not worry about what I wore. The next time you have an event, whether it is a parent meeting, business meeting or black tie affair, keep that simple tip in mind when selecting your outfit!

So stylish! I’m usually too scared to wear the very latest trends so I usually stick with the classics, but it looks like you’re adventurous when it comes to fashion. Very chic.
