Kim Kardashian goes blonde--September 2013
Kim Kardashian goes blonde–September 2013

Kim Kardashian is most famous for one particular body part: her long, dark hair.  No?  OK, but she IS known for her long, dark hair.  Like many naturally dark-haired women, she likes to mix it up from time to time, and has done so with varied levels of success using highlights, extensions, and wigs.

Kim’s most recent makeover took five hours and included a base lift and two full highlights, according to her stylist, and I spy some telltale signs of hair extensions as well.  Dark hair (natural, or even more so when it’s been colored dark) will often only lighten to a medium-light shade, at least during the first visit for a corrective color process.  When the natural hair tapers off all you see at the ends are the extensions, which are in some cases solid blonde, leaving a sudden and noticeable transition.  Another tip to help you detect hair extensions: natural hair is never thicker and healthier on the ends, than in the mid-shaft.

Additionally, she has a hint of what we hairdressers call “hot roots”, a situation that occurs when the base formula is just a little off and the hair gets lighter right at the scalp.  There is also a lot of frizz going on here.  Bleach, as well as pregnancy and post-partum hormones, can make hair more coarse, dry and frizzy.  You can’t have a Brazilian Blowout if you are breastfeeding, but you can have a Pure Brazilian CLEAR treatment to recondition, tame unruly waves and frizz, and maximize shine.

What do you think of Kim’s new look?  I’m not a fan of it.  In case you couldn’t tell…

  1. You are so right! What a bad thing to have them explain it like it’s so simple to achieve! Really, what client will spend 5hrs +the expense to get that less than desired result?!! The photos say it all. she needs your BB expertise too.

  2. I am not really a fan … of that whole family … but I think she really looks better with dark hair.

  3. She looks so much better with her naturally dark hair, or at best the more caramel colored tone or highlights! This blonde just doesn’t work well, and what mom with a newborn can go to a salon for five hours? Eeek! (Oh right, a celeb mom 😉 )

I used blonde hair color to lighten my darker brown hair – I knew I wouldn’t get the blonde on the box but I liked the lighter brown while it lasted. Wouldn’t want to torture my hair to make it blonde!

  4. I like her hair dark as well. Looks much better. I read that she is a bit impatient to lose the baby weight and is even considering breast surgery to get back in shape.
