Jill Stuart’s Collection for Spring 2010 started with a hard-driving beat that matched her hard-driving designs. If you’re a Stuart fan, better have those legs buffed and fabulous by spring because the sexy, short, tough girl designs-albeit with a hint of lace or mesh here and there-require a perfect set of legs. Not for every housewife—maybe that’s why Teri Hatcher and Kelly Bensimon had front row seats.
While black and white have always been basic in everyone’s wardrobe, there wasn’t anything basic about this black and white collection. The designs were hard-edged with black legging cut-outs filled with black mesh. For those with hips, do not despair: strategically placed black (on hips) and white (on derrière), accentuated the curvy positives—but the curves should be minimal; these patterns are not for everyone.
The micro-mini dresses had cut outs too, but here the designer attempted a touch of femininity filling in the cutouts with black lace. An occasional splash of fuchsia added some sparkle. One stand-out piece was the cropped white leather jacket with 3 rows of large silver studs at the waist with a 3-tier flounce in the back. Worn over the black cut-out leggings the look was sharp and commanded attention. When worn over the sparkly white micro-mini dresses, this leather jacket was an edgy compliment.
Accessories completed the look with stiletto boots made of black fishnet with zippers or tie lace-ups in the back. Long, wide-strap shoulder bags in black or white with sparkles or studs completed the long, lean look.
The hair and make-up softened Stuart’s designs. Bob Racine of Phyto did loose pull backs to mid-ponytail level with a casual roll twist that allowed lots of long wisps to flutter. The nude make-up palette was very soft with eyebrows being the focal point of the face.
