In the second blogger challenge for Jane By Design, I was asked to select a style icon. It could be anyone…a relative, a celebrity, a blogger…who inspires my look. Here is my assignment:
“Style icons can be an important source of inspiration. Who is your style icon? Is it your mother or a favorite aunt? A celebrity or an athlete? A world leader or rock star?
Find the plain white t-shirt in your trunk. Using items around your house or your office, create a design on the t-shirt inspired by your fashion icon. Then, put the shirt on your dress form and post a photo of it to your blog, along with an entry that talks about how your design was inspired by your fashion icon.”
I chose Kate Moss as my style icon. Her look is edgy, unique and carefree. It’s important to distinguish that I am looking to Kate’s personal style, what she wears when she is out and about in every day life. Glammed up and in front of the camera, it still holds an edginess but it’s much more embellished and polished. I prefer her raw day-to-day look.
When looking at images of Kate Moss I noticed 2 specific things: she looks edgy but her lines are always clean. Most of the tops she wears in her “every day life” are simple tees that are scoop neck. She often goes braless and rarely has on jewelry (if she does, it’s simple and definitely not chunky!). She is most often seen in the neutrals black, white and gray.
I opted to simply cut the collar away, creating a scoopneck, as well as the hems on the sleeves for a raw, edgy feel. I am using the piece I cut off the sleeve as a ponytail holder, it’s stretchy and holds great!
For the belt, I used a removable shoulder strap from my handbag. The longer necklace is a Droid charging cord (without the plug in part attached), the shorter necklace is an elastic headband.
I finished the look with an edgy studded handbag, black shorts and zipper-detailed boots. These accessories reflect Kate’s style and the edginess that I love so much!
To top off the look- and really make it Kate Moss worthy- I added a black blazer. Kate wears blazers and jackets frequently to complete her outfit.
Simple lines create a great back drop for the more detailed accessories, footwear and cool leather jackets or pants that Kate often wears. I love how taking a simple white tee, making a few minor changes, can create a sexy, edgy look. Accessorize, then go. Easy fashion! What’s not to love?
