What does every woman dream of having? A style all her own; a look that gets her noticed for her fantastic flair for putting an outfit together; a personality to what she wears that reflects who she is; a distinctive characteristic to her wardrobe pieces. Style icons that come to mind when I think of distinct style (for better or for worse, you be the judge) are Vera Wang (black leggings and tunics), Kate Moss (leather and skinny jeans) or Jennifer Lopez (all about the glitz and glam!).
How can you acheive an individual style? Start by asking yourself some questions:
1. Understand what you like. Do you like fullness like ruffles, layers and chunky fabrics or do you prefer streamline fitted clothing?
2. Do you feel prettier in certain colors or prints? Do you always get a compliment when you wear a certain top? What makes that piece so special? Pay attention to your emotions when you are dressed. They will clue you in on your preferences!
3. Do you have a style icon? Which celebrity, athlete, relative or friend inspires you? What is it about their style that captures your attention?
4. What brand ads make you stop and look again? Which runways shows do you anxiously anticipate each spring and fall?
Once you’ve answered these questions, it may help to create a mood board to gather your thoughts and inspirations in one spot. Now, get started on reinventing your style!
The easiest place to start is with accessories. Based on your mood board and the answers to the questions above, purchase, borrow or re-purpose what you already own to create the same feel as your desired style.
A scarf can be worn in a variety of ways but if you prefer a more streamlined look, you won’t want to wear it knotted around your neck! A hat is a must-have but if you prefer a feminine style, a fedora is likely not the hat to make you feel like you are owning your individual style! Pay attention to details and how pieces are worn!
Jewelry is another accessory to look at. If you prefer a quirky kick to your individual style, try pieces that are engraved with a fun saying. If you want to go glam, look to the gemstones for color and bling! If you prefer a more edgy look, invest in pieces that are unique and imperfect!
