I’m not a Glam Girl. I mean, I don’t wear long, fancy nails. I don’t wear bling. I don’t go over-the-top. But there are some occasions when a Mom has got to Glam It Up! Picture It: False eyelashes, long manicured nails and as much bling as my husband can afford… (*sigh* Happy thoughts…)
Since that doesn’t really happen in my world (no red carpet or anything), I take one components at a time and create my own little celebration and Glam It Up in my own way. For everyday, I’ll wear my diamond studs gifted to me from my hubby on my 5th Anniversary. On a hot date with my husband, I’ll wear false eyelashes for fun and flirting. On a sick day, I’ll add artificial nails and admire them as I lay feeling sorry for myself on the couch…
At least that is what I did yesterday. I had a new box of Revlon Naturally Chic artificial nails waiting to be tested. Mind you, I had just clipped my nails off as I had too much breakage and no time to file them properly so my nails were in perfect condition to add an artificial nail.
The Naturally Chic nails come 36 to a box in a variety of sizes so you are sure to get the proper size for each nail. The set also comes with a great little file (keeping it in my purse now!) and cuticle pusher to help apply the nails. My four- year-old was crushed that she couldn’t wear nails of her own but I promised she could help with the “arts and crafts project.” We got started.
First: Apply glue to artificial nail back and top of nail
Second: Press and hold firmly for 5 seconds. Since we are practicing her counting to 20 without skipping 13 and 16, we counted to 20 for each nail.
Pretty simple, right? I mean, it would be for a true Glam Mom. Not me. I kept dropping the nails (with glue already applied, mind you). After 5 nails, I stopped. I was sick afterall and apply 5 was about all I could manage. Plus, I had blogging to do and typing with nails is not something I am accustomed to.

I spent the next few hours with one hand in nails and one not. I was ready to remove. It’s just not my thing and since I didn’t have a big date to head out to, I wasn’t going to stick it out. Let me just interject here that if I was going somewhere fun (night out with the girls, date with my hubby, a concert, etc), I would have made the effort on the second hand and I would have kept them on for more than a few hours.
Come to find out, I needed nail polish remover with Acetone. I had just bought non-acetone the day before! Figures. I did manage to find a very small bit left in a bottle and I poured it over the nails into a bowl and let them soak. I used the orange stick to help pry off the nails as they softened. I didn’t have enough remover to get the glue off my nails so today I am left with glue bumps on my nails.
I learned from this experiment in glam:
- Have someplace to go to motivate you to finish the job
- Have all supplies on hand for application and removal
- I remember why I don’t do this sort of thing often, it’s just not “me”
- Revlon makes a nice set of artificial nails if an occasion arises in my future
If you enjoy artificial nails, don’t let my thoughts influence you. It could have been my state of mind that led me to abandon the project early. If you love the look of long, manicured nails (the Naturally Chic are a nice length, actually) but don’t have the money for trips to the salon, these may work well for you! They are certainly a great option when a mom wants to Glam It Up!
Don’t forget to complete your look with Revlon False Eyelashes! You’ll look stunning on a budget and no one will have to know you didn’t spend hours at the makeup counter and salon!
