Getting Away from Mommy Jeans
We know that stylish mommies do not wear what is known as Mommy Jeans- you know, really high-waisted, maybe a bit too short. That style was trying to make a comeback but I’m pretty sure it won’t catch on with the mom crowd since we are so sick of hearing about (and still seeing) frumpy mommy wearing her mommy jeans. Time to step into the stylish denim
but how do you find the perfect jean?
The search for the perfect fit is an ongoing journey. You need a new pair of jeans after you have your baby and your body has changed. You need a new pair after you’ve changed your lifestyle and lost body fat. You need a new pair because you’re sick of your old pair.
It’s never easy finding the perfect fitting pair of jeans. Styles change and your body changes. You really do need to try on a bunch of jeans before you find the right one for your body. No two designers are alike so one may say size 2 but it will really fit a true size 5 mama. Another calls a slim fit something that is not so slim compared to other brands. Don’t worry about the label, size or so-called cut. Try on everything that appeals to you- and some that don’t- to determine what fits you right.
It sounds so daunting, I know. Fortunately, there are a lot of places on the web that will help you determine the right fit for you. Once you get an idea of style, brand and size, you can either purchase online or seek out the nearest retailer that carries the recommended jeans so you can try them on first.
Here are some very helpful websites to help you shop for your perfect fit:
Zafu.com- Answer a few questions regarding fit and your shape and your wish list for the perfect jean. They recommend many jeans to fit your needs. The recommendations are even given stars for your fit rating. (Three stars means it fits you best.) You can sort the finds by price, leg style, fabric, etc. Plus Size help is available, too! It is a very user friendly site. The jeans they recommend come from a variety of brands and prices. You will be taken to the merchant site should you want to purchase.
Levis Jeanfinder- This tool helps you find jeans based on what where you like your jeans to sit on your waist. Then it asks if you want slim cut or not so slim. Based on your two answers, they recommend their Levis styles. It’s basic but helps you narrow down what you are looking for.
LeeFitFinder- This tool helps you find the right Lee jeans based on your choice of where you want your waistline, how you like your fit (relaxed or other) and how you like your leg openings (boot cut or other). You need to know what your preferences are for this to work. FYI, most of the items found are jeans filed under “close fit” (ie: slim) and low waisted.
mejeans.com- Every pair of jeans is created from scratch and made to fit your exact measurements. There’s no regular size, junior size, plus/petite size, extra long/short size, or anywhere-else in between size. There’s tons of great tips and advice for different body types, suggestions for what kind of jeans you should build and what things you should avoid. Once you have a good idea of what’s right for you, you’re ready to start building! mejeans base price is $119 with additional costs for various add-ons. It’s too late to order for Christmas but why not check into it for the New Year- New You?
The Jean Bible- A guide to help you determine which jeans sold at Melange work for you. The best part of this guide is they have included a “find your body double”. In each body description, they give details of what to look for in the right jean. For example, if you have a flat butt get jeans with backside pockets that are higher, embellished, and widely spread apart to add plump. Find your body double here.
I Love Jeans- The ultimate site for jean lovers includes a bodytype finder, a jeans guide and if you are really stuck, ask the stylist. It’s a comprehensive site and even has a forum to chat with others about your obsession with jeans. Don’t miss this fantastic guide called How to Buy Great Denim by Kate Dailey. She discuss at length what to look for based on your body shape (pear, long and leggy, full-figured and more!) .
Finally, don’t be overwhelmed by price. There are a lot of really expensive jeans that everyone makes you believe you have to have. Stick to your budget- you’ll be able to find something! TIP: If you are buying less expensive jeans be sure to check the hardware! Cheaper zippers are used on the cheaper brands. Do some squats in the fitting room to make sure the zipper doesn’t come down!
