Finding Your Personal Style (with the help of 4 experts)

Harper's Bazaar Great Style: Best Ways to Update Your Look

Fashion Fades, Style is Eternal- Yves Saint Laurent

Finding your signature style may not be as hard as you think.  As someone who loves it all- classic, edgy, boho and feminine, I’m learning you can be a little bit of everything (like Jessica Sarah Parker) or a lot of one thing (like Reece Witherspoon- classic ladylike).

The latest book to join my library is, “Harper’s Bazaar Great Style: Best Ways to Update Your Look” by Jenny Levin.   The pictures are beautiful and it’s such an easy guide to use because of the pictures!  It’s like the best of a year’s worth of fashion magazines under one cover!  In this book I’m learning how to build a timeless wardrobe, how to accentuate my assets and how to put together the look that reflects who I really am.

Because of the pictures, I’m understanding which styles I like and which I’m not a fan of.  I am a visual learner!  For example, I love Gwyneth Paltrow‘s look which is described as “Modern yet classic with a hint of cool”.  I also find Demi Moore‘s look to be inspiring: flirty and fun but fashion forward”.  However, as beautiful as they are, Nicole Kidman‘s (elegant, high-fashion flair) or Gwen Stephani‘s (eclectic) styles wouldn’t be found in my closet!

Turning to the experts for advice on finding personal style, Carolina Herrera, Diane von Furstenber, Donna Karan and Donatella Versace chime in on the topic:

Carolina Herrera: Women can find their personal style by ignoring trends and choosing classic, timeless pieces.

Diane von Furstenberg: Keep an elastic body and an elastic mind, and be as flexible as you can.  And just enjoy life.

Donna Karan: Dress for your own individual spirit and lifestyle.  That matters much more than what’s in or out of fashion in a given moment.  The most important fashion tip I can give is this: Wear waht you feel good in and don’t let the clothes wear you.

Donatella Versace: Listen to your inner voice.  First instincts are usually the right ones.  Choose items that you feel comfortable wearing, and don’t be afraid to try new things.  Most important, feel good about what you’re wearing.

The bottom line is, be you:

  • If you like to be a quirky dresser, wear your outfits with confidence and pride.
  • If you like simple lines and minimal accessories, learn to play up your best assets with clothes that are cut close to your body.
  • Love to be bold, relish the unexpected!
  • Prim and Proper?  Add charm to your outfit with a bow, a touch of lace or a ruffle for a sweet edge.

Work your style to the max and own it!  With a bit of fine tuning, you’ll be the chicest you, you can be!
