Like many husbands, mine is not a shopper. “Get in. Get out. Get on with your life” is pretty much his motto when it comes to shopping. But, thanks to Men’s Wearhouse, I was able to take him on a shopping spree for some really nice clothes! A man needs to look good when his wife is wearing red high heels, you know?

My husband donated his suit several years ago as it was dated and very rarely worn. He does own plenty of button down dress shirts, a bunch of ties (which no longer get worn!) and a couple pairs of dress pants. He owns plenty of Docker-type pants and has a few pairs of dress shoes. If we wanted to go on a dinner date, he has a wardrobe to select from. If we wanted to go on a NICE dinner date, to a wedding or a someplace more dressing than our usual haunts, he was at a loss for what to wear. His wardrobe had holes.

Along comes an opportunity to spend some time in our local Men’s Wearhouse where Kristy, the manager, donned us with her undivided attention (and she wore red high heels, she was great!)! Since it’s just as important for a man to own a great suit as it is for a woman to own a little black dress and fabulous red high heels, we started with the suit fitting. Larry (aka Mister ‘A Mom in Red High Heels’) tried on conservative navy blue, classic black, pinstripe and a check suit. The Michael Kors Charcoal Check Suit was the favorite. This gorgeous suit is so versatile! It can be worn with black or brown shoes, a large variety of shirt colors and ties, as well as worn with a dress tee, instead of a button down dress shirt.  In addition to it’s versatility, it just looks more relaxed and modern than a navy or black suit.  This charcoal gray suit was a winner for Larry’s needs.

We also looked at sport coats, another staple for a man’s wardrobe.  Instead of going with a traditional sport coat, Larry chose a faux leather blazer that looks great with jeans and a variety of more casual pants.  Larry looked hot in this coat.  It was very exciting for me to see him in this type of style.  Like with any makeover, when a person wears something fabulous that they normal don’t wear, it sheds a whole new light on the person.  In my opinion, a leather-like blazer is far more sexy than a fleece pull-over sweatshirt.  Yeah… I’m excited to see my husband in this new look!  Come on date night!

After we had established the key wardrobe pieces we’d be bringing home with us, the on-site tailor marked up the suit and sport coat to alter the fit. If you purchase online or relocate, Men’s Wearhouse offers tailoring at all of their 1000+ stores nationwide. They guarantee if they have altered a seam once, you will never have to pay to have it altered again, within the limitations of the original garment, should you gain a few pounds or lose weight. If you are purchasing slacks, you can have them hemmed while you wait. This type of customer service can’t be beat!

Finally, the attentive staff at Men’s Wearhouse put together a variety of options to wear with both the suit and the sport coat. They have amazing skills! Their training, and naturally good eye, helps customers with the shopping process. We could have spent thousands of dollars because everything they laid out worked beautifully. I was surprised at the versatility of what they chose and how what worked with a charcoal check suit could also work with a brown leather-like jacket! From the shoes to the socks to the pocket silk, every detail of the outfit was thought through.

Talk about easy shopping for a guy- my husband’s style of shopping! Just walk into a Men’s Wearhouse, tell them you want a sport coat and some wardrobe basics to go with it and they’ll give you multiple complete outfits to choose from. It was an amazing experience and I seriously wish I had the talent and knowledge that they have! They truly are professionals!

The aspect of the time spent at Men’s Wearhouse that surprised me most was the variety of styles offered there. I honestly thought they would have suits, dress shoes, ties, dress shoes and little more. I was wrong- way wrong! They offered casual wear, active wear, casual shoes and jeans as well as the tuxedos and suits. It was a great discovery as there are not many places to shop locally for my husband. Now, I’ll go there first, and use my new Perfect Fit Rewards card that earns me a $50 rewards certificate for every $500 I spend there.

In the end, I highly recommend the Men’s Wearhouse. What does Larry say?  He agrees, ” They made the experience very pleasant.  The attention I received was top notch and the selection was great.”

Hair Hangover! I keep replaying the Emmys in my head, going over the dresses, the speeches, the winners…and most importantly, the hair!

The following is my breakdown of the hits and misses:

LOOSE CURLS

Best: Claire Danes, Sofia Vergara, Christina Hendricks (though I hated her dress.) All of these ladies had nice, groomed curls that were shiny and frizz-free without looking crunchy or overly uniform.  To achieve this look, apply a smoothing serum like Sudzz FX Zenyth from the ears down, then use a large iron to form curls.  Wind them up and pin them close to the head to let them set.  You might choose to use one roller in the front for some root lift around the face, but using rollers all over will create too much volume.

Worst: Kyra Sedgwick, Julia Ormond, Toni Collette. To get this look…roll out of bed?  Kyra and Julia looked just that way.  Toni, who has been spotted with overly messy hair before, made a good attempt but fell short due to flyaways and too little control. This could have been tamed after the fact with a non-hold siicone gel, such as Sebastian Laminates Concentrate

UPDO’S

Best: Anna Paquin, Keri Russell, Heidi Klum (whose dress I also hated– we get it, you have nice legs, but that was toooo short!)  Anna’s was the most successful avant garde hairstyle, using a clear band or wire to create a uniform ridge around the top and front after pulling hair back into a modern style.  Keri wore a loose bun with a decorative embellishment, which perfectly complements her ballerina look (though her dress was maybe a little too low-cut?) Heidi’s creative updo was glamorous and chic, using many twists and curls to show off her beautiful highlights.  I love this type of look on Heidi, she wore something similar at this year’s Oscars.  Keep up the good work!

Worst: Rose Byrne, Mindy Kaling, Naya Rivera. Rose’s hair was too messy/frizzy, and Mindy’s and Naya’s were too structural, large, and…just kind of odd.

HAIR WORN DOWN

I don’t generally believe that this is appropriate for an awards show (OK, maybe MTV.)  So I am reluctant to name anyone “best,” but here goes:

Glenn Close, Brooke Burke, Hope Davis.  Glenn looked nice; it would be difficult to put up hair that fine, and her style was age- appropriate.  Brooke is always gorgeous, and her hair was no exception on this night, but it still kind of looked like any old magazine shoot.  Hope’s hair was smooth and nice, but looked more appropriate for a dinner date.

Worst: Padma Lakshi, January Jones, Jennifer Carpenter (hot dress, though).  These ladies just fell short with their casual hair. Padma’s looked like an every day look, nothing bad, but also nothing special and this was a special day.  It ended up being a very special day for Top Chef, but unfortunately not for Padma’s hair.  January was a different story.  Her dress made such a statement (which I liked, but not for this event) that I understand wanting to keep the hair simple.  But sadly, there was frizz around the back and the front had odd locks dangling at odd angles.  I wondered at first if they were extension pieces, but decided it was just too much texturizing pomade on fine hair.  Jennifer looked gorgeous, but her hair was just too “blah.”

EXTENSIONS

Here’s the thing: the BEST extensions are undetectable, so I’m going to focus on a few ladies whose “extra hair” was too noticeable. Lea Michele has long, straight dark hair with bangs on her triumphant show, Glee.  For a temporary change, her stylist opted for clip-in extensions in a lighter shade.  The “darker roots, lighter ends” look is very popular right now, and I like it. BUT–it usually includes a few pops of the lighter color in front, and a blend as the eye travels down the hair shaft.  In this case, the entire top was dark and the entire bottom was several shades lighter.  This was especially apparent from the back!  The awkwardly-parted bangs were sort of distracting, but not in a good way.  Great dress, but not so much on the hair.  Julie Benz, who has surgically altered her face and body almost beyond recognition (but stopped short of Heidi Montag status), was wearing a ponytail extension that just didn’t match the hair growing out of her head.  I don’t understand this.  Sarah Michelle Gellar did it, about 10 years ago, before extensions were so common. It bothered me then, and I didn’t even do extensions yet, but now that they are so much more widely used, there’s just no excuse.

Honorable mentions for overall Emmy hair awesomeness:
Eva Longoria, Kim Kardashian, Julie Bowen, Emily Blunt, Emily Deschanel.

Dishonorable: Edie Falco’s almost-updo (up-don’t), Julie Louis- Dreyfus, Olivia Munn

When you are a mom, it’s more important to purchase high quality than ever before! There are two reasons why:

The Fall 2010 Collection is different than Tory’s classic styles with brightly color tunics, ballet flats and resort wear style.  I love this new side of Tory Burch!  I can relate to the styles in a  much more personal way.  Tory recently shared her inspiration for the fall collection with Fashionista.com:
