    Expert Summer Hair Advice

In my opinion, you can never get too much advice on how to keep your hair healthy and beautiful! What works for me may not work for you, so let’s keep pumping out the information so every mom has the answers to her hair questions!

It may be your favorite time of year, but when it comes to humidity, sun and “hot” summer hairstyles, you’re left with a dry frizzy mane and an endless list of summer hair questions. NYC Colorist, Joseph Mullen at Blackstones Salon gives some advice, and answers the most pressing questions of the season.

    Q. How should I protect my hair color this summer to make it last longer?

    A. Preserving your hair color during the summer is easy, with the added help of some conditioning products. Joseph Mullen, Lead Colorist at Blackstones Salon in New York, recommends trying a product with UV protection or a leave in conditioner like Bumble and Bumble Leave-in. Apply product as directed and make sure to comb through to ensure uniform coverage. To help minimize fading, Mullen recommends a conditioner with a color enhancement.

However, he cautions that you should ask your colorist for the most appropriate color conditioner for your hair so that you maintain the right tones.

    Q. What hair color is best for the hot, sunny summer season?

    A. “Imagine the natural color highlights that the sun creates in a child’s hair,” says Joseph Mullen, “This is the ideal hair color for the summertime, especially because a return to blonde during the summer seasons is always popular,” he adds. “The hardest colors to maintain during the summer are reds and dark or ash browns because they fade more quickly in the sun.” Joseph also points out that the best way to achieve the natural highlight look is to have highlights painted on. This allows for the roots to grow out organically and with a more natural look. It will also allow for longer time in between visits.

    Q. How can I prevent my hair from becoming faded and dry during the summer?

    A. “The best way to avoid faded, dry hair is to stop it before it starts,” advises Mullen. “Of course the best way to avoid sun damage is to cover up, but when this is unavoidable if you know you are going to be out in the sun, use a leave in conditioner or UV protectant product. If the color does fade, have your colorist recommend a color enhancing shampoo or conditioner that matches the hair color you want to keep. Then, use the product once a week or as directed by the manufacturer. This will help control any fading and prevent the dry, flat look that the sun can give the hair.”

    Q. How can I reduce frizziness and dryness in the summer?

    A. “One option is to consider a treatment like Brazilian Hair Straightening,” explains Joseph. “This treatment will provide smooth relaxed waves without the frizz and with at least half the blow drying time.” Joseph also adds is that it transforms the hair without chemically altering the hair strands, but by sealing the hair in keratin. Keratin is the primary protein of the skin, hair and nails. The use of a keratin-based product adds moisture and strength to hair damaged by blow drying, coloring, and traditional relaxers. It is semi-permanent, chemical free and lasts 3 to 5 months.

Joseph Mullen is available by appointment at Blackstones Salon, 19 East 7th Street, NYC. Call (212) 353-2680 for bookings.
