Anne Clara Laugesen, WorkoutPerfect

Your Name: Anne Clara Laugesen

Your Business: WorkoutPerfect

Brief Description of Your Business:

WorkoutPerfect is an online community of health and fitness enthusiasts, run by Anne Clara Laugesen.  Dedicated to sharing experiences and knowledge, the mission of WorkoutPerfect is to help you live a happier, healthier and more active life.  Taking care of your body and mind is vital to live a fulfilling life. I’m constantly on the lookout for new ways of hacking our workouts to share with the rest of the world. I made WorkoutPerfect because I want to change the way many women do fitness. To get real results, we need to put in real effort: If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you!

What was your inspiration to start your business?
That most women still believe that cardio will get them the body they are aiming for, and thus they keep working the treadmill and counting calories. But there is a much more efficient way that most women just are not aware of; by focusing on building muscle instead of on losing weight, we can become stronger both mentally and physically, as well as be more likely to become at peace with our bodies.

What has been your biggest business challenge and how did you overcome it?

Publishing my book! I’m a perfectionist at heart, but if I keep wanting to perfect everything, I’d never get to publish everything. I believe in “done is better than perfect”, but it’s a challenge to put your own words and works out there without being 100% satisfied with it.

I find it difficult to take negative critique, but I am working on improving. I do believe that getting more critique (both negative and constructive) has given me the ability to relax more about publishing my own works.

What is your secret to staying laser focused in your business?
Planning and frequent exercise! I start work every morning at 7:15 and work in 45min sessions. For each session I have a goal – this helps me stay focused and end the day feeling accomplished.
I love to run and do strength training – I run thrice a week in the morning before work, which also helps me stay focused. When you’ve been outside in the cold (at least in Berlin it’s cold these days), it’s easier to keep your mind on the right track during the day.

Any tips for balancing a business and your personal life?
Again, I’d have to say planning. Both planning your work, but also planning when to do social activities.

What is your favorite beauty product to bring along when you travel?
My simple black eyeliner. Simple, but powerful.

Tell us about the outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
That’s got to be my white-buttoned shirt with little black dots, combined with black tight jeans and black-heeled boots. This outfit has gotten me through two great presentations! I’m really prone to wear dark colors (I’m Danish, we do this), but wearing bright colors always work better – so every time I step in front of the mirror in a black shirt, I have to remind myself to wear a brighter color…

What is your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?
I actually don’t have any favorite sites – I google for what I need and find my way around for the specific product. Most often I actually shop beauty products offline!

What motivates you to look your best?
Going to a cool event and meeting great people – that really makes me want to look like a professional ass-kicker (in heels).

As an entrepreneur, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?
If you’ve got material to read and digest, fill up the tub with hot water, print your material and read in the tub. That’s a luxury you only have when working from home, but ahh it’s such a nice alternative to yawning over the paper by the desk.

Name one beauty product you can’t live without:
The aforementioned eyeliner! Doesn’t take up any space and can fix me up anytime.

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.
Heels! I’m totally a heels person, so whenever I go to a somehow fancy event I gotta wear heels. Especially in the summer with a nice summer dress. My favorite pair is a white pair of plateau-heels, but without the normal plateau-feeling of those types of shoes. These are elegant and simple with broad white leather strips that cross over the foot. Don’t have a lot of dresses that go well with these beauties, but the ones I do have, have been used appropriately!

Lip gloss or Lip Stick?

Confession Time! What is your biggest fashion and/or beauty concern at the moment?
Being so busy that even my quick strength routines can be difficult to fit into my schedule. Oh and for sure there’s also Christmas – Christmas is always a bit of a beauty concern, although I try to find a balance that allows me to chew my gingerbread and rice pudding without feeling too guilty!

What is your favorite inspirational quote?
Make every day matter (as said on a sign on a beach in Peru).

How can we get to know you and your business better?
Sign up for my newsletter on WorkoutPerfect! I’m running small experiments that I’m updating about – for instance these days I’m trying out the Wim Hof Method, which is a method of breathing combined with cold exposure. Yes, I’m pouring my cold experiences into this newsletter!
