Exclusive: Meet Teri Gault from The Grocery Game

    By Tammy | November 10, 2009

    teri_gault
    Your Name: Teri Gault

How many children do you have?

2 boys, a 17 year old at home, and a 24 year old married and living nearby

    Your Business Name:

    The Grocery Game

    Brief Description of Your Business:

A website with weekly money saving shopping lists that combine advertised and UN-advertised sales matched with coupons for shopping at your local supermarket.

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?

I have a 17 year old son at home but I started the business when my 2 boys were 15 and 8. I work lots of early mornings and late nights. I also compartmentalize my time. I schedule meetings while my kids are in school. And try to wrap up my day by the time they are getting home from school. When they go somewhere with friends, or watch TV at night, I go to work and try to tie up loose ends.

What is your favorite beauty tip?

Hard to pick, because I have several. My favorite is to rinse the conditioner out of my hair with lukewarm water, and then ice cold water. It lays down the cuticle of my hair and makes it silkier. It’s especially important, since my hair is color treated.

My 2nd best one is also in the shower:

I like to put baby oil all over my body as a final step in the shower, while I’m still wet. Water tends to bead off. Then I just blot my skin dry with my bath towel. Keeps my dry skin silky soft and gives it a nice sheen.

What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion?

Posture! Everything looks better on you, when you stand up straight with shoulders back and down!

Tell us about the outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful.

I don’t have a waistline, even when I’m skinny. I also have a big upper body, and big arms. So I feel best in tops that cross over to give the illusion of a waist. And either long sleeves or 3/4 sleeves. Dark solid colors are also slimming. So with all that taken care of up top, my legs are my best asset. So I always feel better in a dress or skirt that hits about mid thigh. And I like straight skirts, because they elongate more than a skirt that flares. I have a favorite white skirt for summer and a nice pink crossover 3/4 length top to go with. Looks cute with white wedge shoes. For winter, I have a short straight black skirt that I like to wear with a deep blue top underneath (have blue eyes), and black A-line blazer. Looks cute with tall high heeled leather boots or pumps.

What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?

I developed another website for my own shopping with price comparisons and promo codes, and coupons to print: www.TeriToday.com I frequently search my favorite designers: Michael Kors for casual wear and Roberto Cavalli for going out. My best score was a $1200 dollar Cavalli skirt and top ensemble for $199.

What motivates you to look your best?

My husband’s compliments and how good I feel about myself.

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?

Commit to doing something small and simple every night before going to bed. Usually something that takes less than 10 minutes: pluck eyebrows, or facial mask, or put clear polish on my toes or nails to spruce up my manicure or pedicure.

Name one beauty product you can’t live without:

Eyelash curler!!!! I would freak if I lost it.

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.

Heels, not too high for meetings and going out. I love a pair of lizard skin boots that I got on a clearance rack at Nordstrom. Flip flops for everyday wear at home and about town. My favorites are some Swarovski Crystal flip flops that I buy from a lady named Willow (Designs by Willow), in my town who designs them. I have SO many pairs. And I love them all!

Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Do you have a favorite brand/color?

Lip gloss for sure! I really love one that rolls out by Maybelline. It’s their “Shine Seduction“. I got my first two for free at Walgreens. It was on my LIST at www.TheGroceryGame.com. I’ve gotten a few others the same way for 70-80% off!

My favorite color is the RED!!! #510! Yeah baby!

Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share:

I use the buddy system to try on clothes. I go with a friend, and we make one shopping trip all about her, then another day all about me. We go into the dressing room together. The “assistant” friend hands the “shopping” friend the clothes and hangs them up, sorting as “keepers” and “non-keepers”. And the rule is that if the “assistant” friend wants me to try on something yellow, even though I never wear yellow, I have to. In doing that, I discovered I look great in yellow! So the rule is I have to try whatever she tells me to try, even new styles or cuts of clothes, and even if I think it will look bad.

I once bought a cocoa brown dress suit that I thought had the totally wrong cut, but it looked great on. Going with the same friend regularly, helps us to learn what looks good on each of us, and helps us to also try new things, and have someone honest to say when it looks bad or good. Having an assistant in the dressing room makes it faster and easier, and we end up with lots of laughs too! The “shopper” buys lunch for the assistant afterwards. :)

Editor’s Note: Teri, I love your shopping tip!  What fun!  Plus, it turns out to be a totally productive shopping day for the “shopper’!  Great tip!  Thank you for taking the time to share your beauty and fashion tips with us.  It was great to hear you encourage us to commit to one small beauty “chore” per night before bed!  Ten minutes a day helps keep us fresh and polished!
