Exclusive: Meet Rebekah Green of Rebekah Green, Inc.

    By Tammy | November 24, 2009

    rebekahgreen2
    Your Name: Rebekah Green

How many children do you have? 2 Kiddos (Gabriel – 9 years old and Lavender – 7 years old)

    Your Business NameRebekah Green, Inc.

Brief Description of Your Business: As a businesswoman, eco-pioneer and CEO of Rebekah Green, Inc., I consider myself a reverse environmentalist positioned at the forefront of the Green 2.0 un-movement – where global responsibility is as expected as much as it is commended. In 2002, I launched a full-service, multi-million dollar custom design and build firm, constructing and designing luxury green homes featured in countless magazine spreads and on television shows (including my own special on the Discovery Channel). In 2007, I joined iTunes as producer and host of the video podcast series, “The Green Scene with Rebekah Green,” and – serving as creator and executive producer – partnered with networking television producing powerhouse Magical Elves (Project Runway, Top Chef, Last Comic Standing) to develop green-themed programming. My newest business venture is a luxury line of fair trade, sustainable and entirely handcrafted jewelry (with proceeds benefiting Global Green USA, Charity: Water and Heifer International).

What was your inspiration to start your business? Thinking about running businesses is all I’ve ever known. From as young as six or seven with my lemonade stands, to 14 and 15 with my ideas for health food restaurants, to 18 and 19 when I started purchasing investment properties … I’ve just always seen the world through the eyes of someone who wants to create something big and creative in the world.

I love how running a business exercises every single one of my skill sets and never makes me bored. I can design a logo, write an article, style a photo shoot, craft hang tags, manage property, fix my website, develop a show concept and meet with production companies all in the same day.

I just hit the ground running every morning and see how much I can achieve every hour of the day. It’s kind of a game for me. But I have also finally learned – after years of completely burning myself out – how to stop and listen to when I honestly need to stop and just breathe.

The bottom line of my inspiration is CREATIVITY. I create, therefore I am.

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule? I work 24 hours a day. It’s just what I do and who I am, and I’ve made peace with that. So, the fact is, we all just do what we do. We MAKE time for what we care about and what we want. It’s as simple as that. And yes, it gets overwhelming at times, but I just remind myself that I am choosing to do this, so I might as well relax and enjoy the intensity of some moments as much as I enjoy rubbing my kids’ backs when I put them to sleep.

What is your favorite beauty tip? It’s not an easy one or a popular one, but the number one tip is eating incredibly well – and mostly a fruit and vegetable-based diet (it’s very easy for me, because I can’t imagine eating any other way myself, but I know that not everyone is like me). And the other challenging one is no alcohol. I never started drinking in my life, and I think that looking like I’m 22 when I’m actually 33, might have something to do with that!

But to each her own. You have to enjoy life the way you like to also!

What is your favorite beauty product to bring along when you travel? I will feel like I’m in big trouble if I don’t have my Super Facial Moisturizer … see more info on that below.

Tell us about the outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful. It really changes everyday for me, but I do tend to gravitate toward anything in black if I need to feel strong and confident. But when I’m feeling soft and gentle, and I have a day off from running the whole show, I have a pink dress with flowers across the bust that I just love. I feel like a princess in it! And the color and mood of the dress go PERFECTLY with my ballerina slippers. You can see my favorite dress on the SHOW page of my website.

What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion? I’m going to have to cheese out on this one and say http://www.rebekahgreen.com. But it’s a genuine answer because I really don’t shop online! I find that I absolutely must try things on to see if they will work for me. But with EARRINGS, that’s a different story. My line of earrings will literally go with everything and will work for everyone. I swear that it’s true, it’s amazing.

What motivates you to look your best? Since I worked in construction for years and years, I never spent a moment’s thought on fashion. I actually purposefully pushed it out of my life because it seemed like a waste of time and money to me. But when I started creating an extension of my company in the entertainment industry, a focus on fashion and personal presentation became a requirement.

Once I started to get the hang of how to care about how I presented myself in the world, I was BLOWN AWAY by the powerful effect that it had on others and how I viewed myself.

A dear and genius friend of mine once said that she figured out that looking your best is actually a gift to the world – because beauty in all forms is a gift to the world. Just like fine art and architecture, putting attention and care into how you present yourself can speak volumes about who you are without you having to say a word.

Now, I take the responsibility seriously, and I do my best to live up to the potential that I see in myself.

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips? Hmmm … honestly, I don’t do all that much to take care of myself with a huge beauty regimen. I have never been interested in spending my time that way. But I do try to get in a thorough face washing twice a day. So, I guess I save time by not doing much in the first place … but I’m not sure how helpful of a tip that is!

Name one beauty product you can’t live without: A product I can’t live without is a facial moisturizer that I discovered at the Ona Spa in West Hollywood. The brand is Environ, and the product is simply called “Super Moisturizer” – and it truly is. I have VERY temperamental skin and this stuff not only gives me the most incredible glow, but it doesn’t irritate my skin AT ALL. I never want to be without it again!

The product is expensive, though, so I use it during the day for the amazing glow, and I use a really reasonably priced, handmade Shea Butter product at night.

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair. Oh my god, hands down – FLATS! I realize that it is probably sacrilegious to say that on a website named in the glory and likeness of the high heel, but since I worked on a construction site in work boots most of my life, I feel like I’m going to die when I’m wearing heels. If I absolutely have to wear a pair to be photographed on a red carpet, I will carry them with me in my purse, put them on just before I walk in, pray to god that I don’t fall over on the carpet, and then put them right back in my purse one minute later.

I think heels look gorgeous, but I’m incredibly clumsy when it comes to wearing them. My FAVORITE shoes are flats – any kind that look like a ballerina slipper. Actually, I’ve thought about starting that trend on the red carpet – wearing actual ballerina slippers. I have definitely worn mine around town, but I don’t think I’ve done it for photographs yet.

Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Do you have a favorite brand/color? GLOSS! I heard that lipstick might be making a come back this season in order to achieve a more sophisticated and polished look, but I just can’t bring myself to cake that stuff on. It feels and looks too inauthentic to me – but that’s just me! I think lipstick can look good if done just right on other people, but gloss is a much safer bet.

For gloss, I LOVE the minty, tinted kind from C.O. Bigelow. You can get it at Bath & Body Works in pretty much any mall. I’ve turned every one of my girlfriends on to it, and they can’t thank me enough!

Are you on Twitter, Facebook or MySpace? If so, please include your links so we can follow you! Yes, I just got signed up, so I have officially entered the modern world!

Any additional comments on beauty and style you’d like to share: My biggest tip for hair is getting a water softener. I have found that the real issue with keeping hair healthy revolves around the water that you wash it in more than anything else at all. Also, be very gentle with it, just as gentle as you should be with all of yourself. We work really hard as moms, so the number one beauty and style tip that I have is to find time to relax and smile somehow! It looks much better than being stressed out.

Editor’s Note: Rebekah, it was so  fun to read your interview!  Thank you for your candid answers and great product recommendation!  I wish I was more like you and would enjoy a diet based mostly on fruits and veggies!  I need to work a little harder to be more like you!  And honestly, it’s not a crime to dislike heels but I’m happy to hear you make the effort from time to time…that’s all I ask!

Readers, please visit Rebekah’s website and take a look at her beautiful fair trade, sustainable and entirely handcrafted earring designs!  They will make someone a beautiful holiday gift!
