The August 2008 issue of Vogue Magazine features four models at different stages of life and their personal styles. Elaine Irwin-Mellencamp (John Mellencamp’s wife) was one of the models to share how her style has evolved over the years. You know Elaine as the face of Almay. She has also modeled for Victoria’s Secret, Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein as well as many editorials and covers of a variety of magazines. Elaine is 38-years-old.
I thought what Elaine shared was especially fitting for A Mom in Red High Heels:
Talking about her current style, Elaine says this, “Living in Indiana, I do wear a lot of denim- classic labels like Levi’s and Earnest Sewn. A white shirt is my staple; I have a lot, especially Theory and Brooks Brothers, as well as a ton of Indian print skirts that I find in thrift shops- they always go with a white shirt, of course!
My closet isn’t as diverse as I’d like, but I’ve stopped buying fussy things I’ll wear only once. Now it’s no to anything that requires parts that make it work; inevitably, I’m foraging at the bottom of my drawers for the one thing that’s supposed to tie the look together….
With two boys (ages 12 and 13) my clothes have to have versatility. I don’t walk around in sweatpants all the time, but it makes sense to be comfortable when I’m doing regular-life things like going to my kid’s football games. It’s a funny spot to be in- looking put together but casual and dressing appropriately for my age.”
She later says that “When I open my fabulous purse these days, there are tons of lollipops inside.” Can anyone relate?! You can read the full write-up on page 112 in the August 2008 Vogue.
I want to stress, since it is the premise of A Mom in Red High Heels, that no matter where you are living, how old your kids are, how much success or money you have you can look exactly as Elaine suggested: Put together, casual and age appropriate. What’s in your closet? Are you dressing to look your best everyday?

Now that’s jsut freaky. We both posted about the same issue on the same day. Talk about the same wavelength! But really this was my fav. issue of vogue in a long long time.
It was a good issue of Vogue. I’m typically not a Vogue reader but the content caught my eye: The Age(less) Issue!
