Does Your Hairstyle Reflect Who You Are?

Does your hairstyle reflect who you are? Terri’s doesn’t. She is a mom who needs some help recapturing her former style and wrote in asking for the advice of hair experts Amanda George and Neil Weisberg of Neil George Salon in Beverly Hills.

Terri answered a few questions for the stylists:

What is your current hair complaint or concern?  Needing a new style so you stop pulling it back into a ponytail every day is a totally valid complaint! My baby is a hair puller, so I do wear a lot of ponytails and clip up dos, but I love wearing it down when we aren’t playing. I LOVE bangs, but because of a prominent colic, I can’t keep them on my forehead–they just flop to the side.

What is your current hair texture (course, thin, curly, straight)? My hair is straight and thin, but I have a lot of it.

What type of change do you want? Drastic? Bangs? Minor-just looking to freshen up? Are you willing to cut it all off? Want to keep it long but want an edgier style? I was a hip Chicagoan before becoming a Michigan mom, and my style no longer reflects who I am.

Is there a celebrity style that you long to have? If so, share what it is you like about it. Every picture I’ve seen of Marion Cotillard is different, not boring, and lovely for her face whether up, down, straight, long, medium, curly, etc. Love the versatility of her look and her whole style of dress and makeup. Love Gwen Stefani‘s look too–and she seems to do a lot of “mom” up-dos but with style.

Are you looking for a hair color change? If so, are you willing to make a big change or just some highlights? Anything, really. My gray comes in fast and all around my face–not much elsewhere–and I keep doing store-bought browns that go red or black or multi-toned Cheshire-cat. :)

How often are you willing to visit the salon? Once every six weeks or twice a year? Every couple of months would be OK. I just long to feel less boring and frumpy.

Thanks so much for the chance to get some help, Tammy! I just love visiting your site every day.

Blessings,

Neil Says:
We know you love your length- but this is what we think: For your fine straight hair, I think it would be great if you cut it shorter (just above shoulder length) into a sleek bob (think Katy Perry‘s bob without the bangs and a little longer)! This is chic and easy and can give you the glamour you want. Also, if it’s shorter like this, baby can’t reach it to pull as easily! A bob is very versatile in that you can let it air dry naturally, blow dry or flat iron straight, or even set in hot rollers for a very Marion Cotillard-esque look that you say you love! Gwen Stefani is known for her love of hot rollers as well. They seem intimidating, but are easy as pie once you try them once or twice! This will require more upkeep (probably a cut every 8-10 weeks) but it will be worth it if you love it.

Amanda Says:
This mum has a lovely face , but her colors looks a bit oxidized and orange. I would suggest going for a color similar to Brooke Shields- a soft mink brown. This can be simple to achieve and easy to maintain with The Hair Color Mix Book: More Than 150 Recipes for Salon-Perfect Color at Home, a bible for coloring your hair at home. We are proud to say she’s a part of the Neil George team!

Terri, I think you would rock the bob and look as funky and stylish as Marion in this modern twist of an “updo”! Very appropriate for life as a mom but full of modern style! Please send us an email and pictures if you make a change!
