I’m guilty of being pretty hard on my hair. If you’ve been following A Mom in Red High Heels for a while, you know that I have color frustrations. It seems that every 6-8 weeks when I get my color done, I come out with something different. I’m looking for the right balance of warm and cool and haven’t found it yet. You could say, I’m a bit like Ashley Simpson with her multiple hair color changes but while she goes from one extreme to another, I’ve been every color except the extremes: black, deep chestnut, red or platinum. For me, it’s been every shade of cool to warm browns and blondes.
When I was in New York this past week covering Eileen’s MAGnificent Makeover sponsored by Maghound, I decided I would surprise my family and come home blonde. I worked with the same colorist that Eileen had. Lauren agreed I needed to brighten up and go blonde. She also noted that it would take more than one color session to get my color looking great.
I left Warren-Tricomi salon at The Plaza Hotel a much lighter shade than I walked in as. Strangely, my family didn’t even notice the change. I thought my husband would be really excited since he recently commented he liked me lighter better. After complaining to them that they didn’t even notice, my almost 9 year-old son said, “Mom, you change your color so often, how can we keep up?”. There you have it. I abuse my hair.
While getting my hair cut at Warren-Tricomi the stylist advised I use a LOT of deep conditioner over the next 6 weeks before getting my hair colored again. I’ve made a list of my favorite deep conditioning products that I’ll be using to give my hair the TLC it deserves just in case you abuse your hair too!
- Paul Labrecque Repair Condition Restorative Protein Mask- This cream conditioner puts life back into damaged hair. Made with rick silk proteins, egg, soy milk extract, macadamia nut, abyssinian and coconut oils, this is one yummy mask! I even have my husband using it on his “swimmer hair”.
- Pantene Pro-V 5-Minute Strengthening Mask- helps keep hair strong to prevent breakage. Interestingly, I wasn’t planning a cut at Warren-Tricomi but Lauren told me I had a “Chemical Cut“, meaning a lot of breakage from previous hair color. Taking off an inch and a half helped rid of most of the breakage, now I’m determined to prevent more breakage as I’ve worked long and hard to acheive long hair!
- Rene Furterer Complexe 5 Regenerating Extract- to aid in scalp circulation to enhance the growth of healthy, beautiful hair.
- Neil George Indian Gooseberry Treatment Oil- I use this either before I shower as an oil treatment that I let sit in my hair while I shower or as a pre-styling product to help reduce frizz and help my hair to comb out easily. This product smells great and adds nice shine to dull, dry hair.
Before
After
The before picture is 30 minutes prior to my color. After is at home in sunny California. I am truly happier as a blonde and will be shopping local salons to see who does the highlighting treatment, balayage. I really liked the process of the balagage being painted on my hair for highlights vs. the traditional foils. After the balayage was processed, a gloss was added and I was done! Love the speed of it! Also, in between balayage treatments, I can just get a gloss put on to keep my roots from looking obnoxious! I’m hoping this color is a keeper so my hair can be light the way I like it and grow out healthy! Of course, continuing to get Brazilian Blowouts will help with the condition of my hair as well.
If you abuse your hair like I do, then be sure to use a deep conditioner 2-3 times per week. You’ll notice a difference in the strength and feel of your hair.

I love Pantene!!
Thanks for the product tips! I’m also a color addict, but mine usually is red which washes out so quick, I have to have it done all the time. I’ll have to try the Neil George Gooseberry oil. My current faves are Jonathan IB Infuser and Frederick Fekkai deep conditioning mask.
Thanks for the product recommendation! I hear red is hard to keep fresh!
Last weekend, while on a spa vaction in Paris, I noticed the Shielo Hydrate Line (both shampoo and conditioner).
Six days of sun and swimming had done a job on my hair and made it damaged. I bought some at the beauty store I was in and washed my hair with it (both the Shielo Hydrate Shampoo and the Hydrate Conditioner) and towel-dried.
I put the hotel-provided shower cap over my hair and used the blow dryer for about 5 minutes to heat my hair. I left it in while I showered, then rinsed so the Shielo Hydrate Conditioner was on for about 5-10 minutes altogether. I have very curly colored hair that I let air-dry. The day before it was approaching steel wool.
After the Shielo Hydrate products, it was soft and bouncy. It stayed soft throughout the week even with several washings. Since it takes more time than I can devote daily, I used it again the following Sunday. My hair was beautifully soft and springy again!
