Should a Child Be a Style Icon at 18 Months?

My guess is most moms find it easy to dress their daughters cute but find it far more difficult to dress themselves nice. Not the case with Katherine Heigl! Apparently, she finds it a challenge to keep her daughter at the top of her fashion game!

Daily Makeover reports:

Katherine Heigl admits she feels under pressure to make her baby daughter fashionable.

The stunning actress–who is regularly voted one of the world’s most stylish women–is trying to ensure 18-month-old Naleigh keeps up with the likes of Suri Cruise and Kingston Rossdale in the style stakes but is struggling.

She said: “Dude, I try, but I’m not nailing the baby fashion. It’s intimidating. I get beautiful outfits from Gap and baby Juicy, but I’m not layering it or putting her in Prada flats. It’s really stressing me out.”

Despite Katherine’s efforts, little Naleigh may struggle to threaten four-year-old Suri’s reputation as the world’s most stylish tot.

It has previously been reported the adorable girl–daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes–had $25,000 a month spent on her clothes because Katie wants her daughter to be the “most fashionable kid in Hollywood”.

A source said: “Dressing Suri in amazing outfits has become Katie’s favorite hobby. She’ll scour the internet and Beverly Hills shops to find items and get inspiration for different looks. “One of Katie’s favorite looks is 80s-inspired–she puts Suri in leggings and long sweatshirts or bright dresses. Suri loves getting involved and choosing things too.”

Kingston’s mother Gwen Stefani has also revealed how her three-year-old is showing early signs of becoming a style icon himself.

She said: “At that age they like to be in control of everything, so I let him choose. Luckily, everything in his closet is cute so no matter what he picks, he’s gonna look good. For a while he was into costumes. Now he doesn’t even want to wear shoes.”

I’m curious, do you think celebrities should be overwhelmed with what to dress their kids in?  I like the way Sarah Jessica Parker allows her son James to dress- like a regular kid with holes in the knees of his jeans!  Way to keep it real SJP!

  1. I’m not a Mom, so maybe I don’t get a say…but I think 25K a month is ridiculous for an adult, never mind a child who is constantly growing and changing. I’m all for giving a child some freedom to develop their own style, and it’s no surprise that Suri dresses ahead of her age (though I hate the baby heels), or that Kingston is funky, considering their parents, but give me a break.

I’m with you, keep it real. Good for SJP (also a fashion plate but not forcing it on her babies) and if I may nominate another, Jennifer Garner, for letting their kids be kids!

I saw this post and just had to jump in. I love dressing my girls adorably and fashionably. It was much easier when they were toddlers because there are so many cute things.

Now, at almost 7, I need to find things that are age appropriate but not babyish or too old. I find most designers think a 7 year should dress like a 17 year old and that is so NOT going to happen on my watch! They do not need short shorts or midriff tanks tops. They are little girls!

With that said…I do like dressing them fashionably BUT to worry about whether I am keeping up with the next family…is just ridiculous…whether they are stars or not!

$25k on a kid’s budget is outrageous…some families don’t even make $25k a year!! I rarely pay full price for their clothes. In fact it’s kind of a joke but my girls wills say to each other “It’s not on sale, mama won’t buy it”

When we go to church or somewhere nice my girls are dressed nicely…but if we are going to run errands or be at home…jeans, sweats and comfy clothes are the mandatory dress.

To be worried whether your child is on the best dressed list…seems like you don’t have a lot to keep your thoughts occupied.

Kids should be kids. Dress them nicely and fashionably when need be and the rest of the time…let them play! They grow up soon enough!

  3. Good grief! Naleigh is adorable, anything she wears is gonna look adorable no matter. I think Suri’s outfits are ridiculous, honestly. How much fun can that little girl really have dressed like an 18 year old at prom? Every day.

I used to think Katie Holmes put Suri in really cute things but now, I think she’s funneling frustration elsewhere into too many “costumy” clothes for her daughter.

I agree it’s fun to dress your kids cute and I cringe when my son looks a mess…which is often… but I don’t want the focus of my time to be primping the kids because that’s simply not healthy for any of us. Kids learn by watching and if they see mom + dad caring for themselves, they will too as time passes. For now, let the kids be kids.

Katie Holmes uses Suri as an accessory in my opinion.

@Jordana- I was thinking of Jennifer Garner last night but couldn’t think of her last name at the time of posting so I just used SJP. :) I agree she is another down-to-earth example of how a mom should let her kids dress for every day!

I know I’m jumping in late, sorry. :)

I have a 3yo daughter Jasmine, and a 2yo son Johnny, and not exactly a lot of income – my problem is not how to find seriously cute clothes, there’s so much out there! It’s when to draw the line and say, “They’ve got enough pretty stuff, we need to pay the bills!” :D

    I don’t suppose Katherine was kidding around…?
