Changing Your Hairstyle

The title almost makes you sick to your stomach, doesn’t it? Changing your hairstyle is so much more complicated than changing your handbag. It’s a commitment. One you have to live with for a very long time. I’ve done it. I’ve cut my hair only to immediately start growing it back. You may flip through magazine after magazine like I do, looking for the perfect update to your most recent cut. Or perhaps not. Maybe you’ve held on to the same style for y-e-a-r-s and it’s getting a little b-o-r-ing! I learned a thing or two about taking a different perspective about my hair while attending the Total Beauty Summit recently.

Change is EXCITING” is superstar stylist Dusty Simington’s motto. He says with every cut, he is transitioning his client into the next look. He thinks that all women should change their hair with the changing fashion. He should know. He won the Master Stylist of the Year at the North American Hairstyling Awards in 2007 and is staring in his own TV Pilot called Making the Cut. Dusty’s salon is Salon Gregories in Newport Beach, CA. He is also founder of Kronos Hair products.

Dusty was one of the Total Beauty summit guest speakers. While his time was short, the man got a LOT in (including a clip from his TV Pilot…I’ll be watching!). He is so super energized, passionate and cool to the tenth degree! I’d love to have a session with him! (Dusty, if you read this…call me!). Three super-lucky beauty bloggers were selected to receive a “Dusty Makeover”. The results were great (of course!).

Dusty working his magic!

Dusty says the POB (think POSH’s hairstyle) is SO out. Move on girls! The look is a bob with added layers and bangs for lots of versatility. Scared of bangs? Don’t be! According to Dusty, you can be in and out of bangs in 2 weeks! Start the side sweep training as soon as the length gets in your way and you’ll blend those bangs right into your hairstyle! Color should be tone-on-tone, nothing that is too much of a contrast.

My new perspective is go with change. Evolve. Live. As Dusty so tactfully said, “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones. With all that information and technology out there, no one can look bad. People who do are simply stupid.” A little honesty never hurt anyone. Get with the change, Moms!

I have a love-hate-love relationship with my hair. I’m African American so I’m not blessed with the naturally silky gorgeous texture. For the past year I’ve kept my hair natural-meaning no relaxing (chemically straightening). Finally I caved in on March and i relaxed it now it’s breaking…I got so fed up I chopped it off. Now I miss my long hair…

sorry…I felt the need to rant and complain =)

I am one that envies other womens’ hair, but never have a clue what to do with my own. After having it at all different lengths, straight and curly, a phenomenal amount of colors, I’m at a loss with what to do with it! I am currently trying to grow out what was a very short haircut to my shoulders, I’m about half way there, but am frustrated. Thanks for the post, it helps me feels like I can be attractive if I put a little effort into it!
