What was your inspiration to start your business?
I spent close to 20 years in Europe, in a relationship/marriage that I allowed to stifle my true Self, then another four years in a similar rebound relationship. Both relationships stifled my power, authenticity, creativity and expression and ultimately, my success in life. I finally got up the courage to leave both relationships and my life in Europe, returned to my family on Cape Cod and began an amazing healing process. I repaired my confidence, became my Self again and really owned my truth. At the end, I realized I had lots of experience and information for people going through the same situations. Serving people as a Confidence Coach is the most logical, exciting and rewarding thing I can possibly do for my Self and for my daughter.

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?
During the day, while my kid is at school and then again after she is asleep!

Any tips for balancing a business and motherhood?
Sleep as much as possible! It takes the cranky right out of Ms. Mommy Crankypants.

What motivates you to look your best?

What was your inspiration to start your business?
When my son was first born, I mixed baby lotion with styling products to give him a small curl on top of his head. I thought it was adorable and was amazed at how many people (everyone from an 80 year old gentleman to a teenage waitress) would stop to ask about what I had used or to share a story of how they related to this seemingly timeless look. After an ongoing joke with my husband about how someone should “create” a product specifically to achieve this look for infants, I read an article about the dangerous toxins commonly used in baby products (The Campaign For Safe Cosmetics No More Toxic Tub, 2009). The alarming information inspired me to create something safe and fabulous, and Hot Tot was born.

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?
I try to plan meals in advance so that even on days full of chaos, I know what we’re having for dinner. I work seven days a week, though my weekend hours are much shorter (for the most part).

Any tips for balancing a business and motherhood?
I continue to remind myself that my kids will only be small for a short period of time. I’m not as good at balance as I’d like to be, though many moms aren’t. My family is my priority. Sometimes you just have to take a break; the work will be there when you get back.

What is your favorite beauty product to bring along when you travel?
I love Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle and Chance. Though both fragrances are very similar, they differ slightly, keeping my scent familiar but never boring (to me). I wear one of them daily and wouldn’t feel like myself if I didn’t.

Tell us about the outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
I love any outfit that accentuates a fabulous shoe. I tend to gravitate to black clothing (though I’m not sure why) and love leggings, skinny jeans, ankle booties, and tweed jackets with long accent necklaces. I love shopping and getting dressed!

Besides your own site, what’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?
Who doesn’t love Sephora!?! It really is like Heaven on Earth. I dream of buying Hot Tot there someday ? Coolspotters.com is also a lot of fun, as it allows users to identify and purchase anything they’ve seen a celebrity wear. What motivates you to look your best?
Age? Pregnancy? My handsome husband? All of the above?

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?
While “me” time is extremely limited as a mom and businesswoman, I am a HUGE advocate for exercise. I love to run in the mornings for 20-30 minutes and work out with weights for about an hour in the evening after dinner (5 days a week). While it sounds like a lot, exercise actually saves a ton of time when getting dressed and ready. Naturally, clothes fit a healthy body better. Being in shape saves time because I obsess a lot less than I used to. Exercise has taught me to be much more forgiving and accepting of my looks.

Name one beauty product you can’t live without:
MAC’s (208) Angled Brow Brush and bareMinerals Powder Brow in Brunette are my must-have duo. Eyebrows transform a face.

Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair.
The higher the heels the closer to God. Honestly. I am known for wearing insanely tall shoes. I think my husband and I had been dating six months before he realized I wasn’t supermodel tall.

Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Do you have a favorite brand/color?
Both. I love the look of a nude lip and use MAC’s Fleshpot. After blotting, I apply a bit of Laura Mercier gloss in Petal.

What was your inspiration to start your business?
My mom is a make-up artist and I grew up watching her transform women in her chair – it became crystal clear how a little lip gloss and some girlfriend-to-girlfriend chatter could transform a woman’s day, and even, her life. I became a beauty product junkie, and in addition, I was also naturally the one my friends turned to for love & relationship advice. So, beauty & “sexy” became my calling cards. Yet, while I was always passionate about all things feminine & sexy, I soon discovered I wasn’t so passionate about the offering of “sexy” products on the market. They were tacky, the quality was poor, and they simply didn’t fit in with my lifestyle or in the way that I liked to shop. I wanted to create a line of sexy beauty & bedroom products that were actually sexy, that actually made me feel sexy and more confident. I knew that if I had a need for those products, then so would millions of other women!

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?
I’m still trying to figure out the best way to create a consistent work/Mom schedule, though since each week’s business needs are slightly different, I find that “going with the flow” is sort of the way to go! I carve out approximately 5 hours each day to work, but luckily, I have a lot of flexibility as to when those hours are. That allows me the freedom to take Rocky to music class, play dates, on grocery runs with me and more. My husband is also my business partner, and once the baby was born, he took on the lion’s share of the actual “running” of the business – and thank goodness for that! I had a serious (and long-lasting) case of baby brain my first year of mommyhood. That said, I still managed to release my first book, go on a book tour, appear on several TV shows, and land several new clients in that year! Now, my main priorities are PR, product development, and business development.

Any tips for balancing a business and motherhood?

The balancing act is hard, it just is! My best tips are:

1. When you’re with your baby, really BE with your baby and put work stresses and email checks aside. When you’re working, really WORK and try to tie up your project’s loose ends before you leave for the day. This helps reduce the “mother’s guilt” you often feel when you’re working, because the time you’re spending with your baby is meaningful and completely present (instead of jumping up and down to check emails every half hour!)
2. Find multiple moments each week to connect with yourself, as a woman, as an individual. It’s so important to nurture YOURSELF, the “YOU” outside the role of business owner, and outside the role of mother. I find that these moments of connection – things like driving with the windows down belting out my favorite tunes, taking a yoga class, having a glass of wine with girlfriends – these are the moments that fill up my tank and give me the mental & physical stamina to balance business & motherhood without any major meltdowns!

What is your favorite beauty product to bring along when you travel?
I bring my Clarisonic Classic Skin Brush with me on all my travels, along with a good facial scrub. I find that traveling can wreak havoc on my face with dryness and break-outs, and the Clarisonic just works it’s magic every time and keeps my skin consistently clear. That, and Perfekt Skin Perfection Gel – it gives the skin a clear, smooth look before you apply make-up, and just makes me feel like I look less tired!

Tell us about the outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful.
I’ve got two “go to” outfits that make me feel confident and beautiful. For business meetings, it’s any one of my 20+ Diane von Furstenberg dresses! I have 20+ for a reason… They’re always feminine, always forgiving, and they never go out of style! You can wear them to a business meeting and then straight out for cocktails.

For more casual outings? A pair of leggings, a tight tank dress that hits mid-thigh, a sexy/comfy sweater wrap, and a long necklace – I call this my Mom Uniform! Functional for running around with the baby, but cute & sassy enough for a lunch date with the husband.

What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion?
I love to shop for clothes at the physical stores… but for beauty? Sephora.com is my playground!

What motivates you to look your best?
My mom always looked great and she made it seem effortless with her “5-minute face” routine that she’d do before school runs! I never understood why she had to put on make-up, but now I do… because a little gloss, mascara and blush went a long way to make her FEEL amazing. It changed her outlook and boosted her confidence – which, in turn, helped her have a great day! I feel the same way. When I take the time to spruce up, I feel better for it tenfold. With regard to fitness & my figure? I always say that exercise is my natural anti-depressant. A fit & sexy body is just the cherry on top!

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?
My 5-minute face goes something like this! Perfekt Skin Perfecting Gel for a smooth “canvas.” Lancome Teint Miracle to cover any imperfections. YSL Touche Eclat to highlight & brighten dark circles. The right color blush for apples & contour (ask your make-up artist what color is best for you this season!). Latisse for long, natural, unbelievably gorgeous lashes (ok, this takes longer than 5 minutes to work!). Curl and apply mascara. Line the inner lids for a sexy, edgy look that catches people’s attention. Finish it up with a dab of MAC Lipstick and Booty Parlor’s Kissaholic Aphrodisiac Plumping Lip Gloss! DONE!

Despite the number of shoes in my closet, I’m not actually a shoe person! You’ll usually find me in flip-flops. I’m a California girl right now! Unless, I’m going out. Then, it’s heels (but they have to be comfortable! I rarely, if ever, torture my feet any longer!)

Thank you very much! I always call my curls my best accessory! I didn’t always embrace them though– there were those early teenage years where I just wanted “wings and bangs” like the rest of the girls! That said, I never straightened or chemically processed my hair – it just wasn’t my thing. It was only when I found a stylist who truly understood curly hair that I fell madly in love with them and really learned to “rock my curls.” Right now, here is my curly hair regimen:

1. Wash & Condition
2. In the shower, generously apply one of the following and comb through with fingers or wide-toothed comb, then wrap up in towel to wring out water a) Yanai Van’s Strong Hold Gel. AMAZING STUFF! b) Miss Jessies Quick Curls
3. Twist select curls around your fingers to define
4. Diffuse! My new favorite hair dryer is the Volume Boost™ Infiniti Pro by Conair. It has the coolest attachment that lifts & separates my curls!
5. Shake it out, back-comb/rat it up where need be, and smooth on a bit of hair oil for sheen!

I try to keep my work schedule very consistent. My team knows when I’m in the office, so meetings can be scheduled and projects can get done. But I know things always come up, so I have 2 or 3 people who I can rely on for “back up” when I need a helping hand with the kids. I am fortunate to have my mom as my #1 back up!

I always had an eye for detail and began my career in fashion as a photographer, working on shoots for leading fashion magazines. A born and raised New Yorker, I was living and working downtown when I created the Trigger bag in 2003. Inspired by the leathers I found to bind my portfolios, I began to create my own handbags that fit my need for luxury and function. Day to night for quintessential busy downtown lifestyle, the Trigger became known as ‘the bag that launched an industry’ and resulted in immediate cult status as models and editors started placing orders with me directly. The rest is Botkier history!

When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule?

When I first started Botkier I wasn’t a mommy though had my first daughter about a year and a half into it. I now have three amazing kids and I just try to do my best. You never reach the perfect balance but prioritizing and being organized are necessary tools to get through everyone’s busy schedule!

Any tips for balancing a business and motherhood?

Don’t beat yourself up. There are days when you may have to work late and others when you get into the office late. It’s double duty no matter how you look at it so try to make time for yourself without the guilt.  An occasional massage and good pedicure usually does the trick.

What is your favorite beauty product to bring along when you travel?

Rose Water on the plane and everywhere else! I keep a bottle at my office and whenever I feel tired I spray some on my face and feel instantly rejuvenated. It also works to set your makeup if you have an after work event or dinner date with your hubby!

Tell us about the outfit that makes you feel confident and beautiful.

I love a strong blazer – either over jeans, blouse & flats or leggings & tunic with a great pair of boots. Blazers help turn any outfit into a more polished look with an edge.

I love Shopbop, so many brands and styles you can be on there for hours and of course Net-A-Porter for some serious designer inspiration.

What motivates you to look your best?

When you look good you feel good. It sounds corny but it is true, it works wonders if you are having a stressful day. Put some lipstick on and you feel like you can conquer the world.

As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips?

I wash my makeup off and put on my eye cream and face cream during the kids bath time in the bathroom with them. We are all washing up at the same time so by the time I have my ‘grown up’ moment and they are all in bed I am fresh faced and not too lazy to take care of me! Also, I apply my make up on the way to work: simple tinted SPF moisturizer, mascara and lipstick.

Name one beauty product you can’t live without:

NARS lipstick pencils and Sheisedo eyelash curler. Nars goes on so smooth it’s a perfect low maintenance lipstick that doesn’t get messy.
