What does every woman dream of having? A style all her own; a look that gets her noticed for her fantastic flair for putting an outfit together; a personality to what she wears that reflects who she is; a distinctive characteristic to her wardrobe pieces. Style icons that come to mind when I think of distinct style (for better or for worse, you be the judge) are Vera Wang (black leggings and tunics), Kate Moss (leather and skinny jeans) or Jennifer Lopez (all about the glitz and glam!).

How can you acheive an individual style? Start by asking yourself some questions:

1. Understand what you like. Do you like fullness like ruffles, layers and chunky fabrics or do you prefer streamline fitted clothing?

2. Do you feel prettier in certain colors or prints? Do you always get a compliment when you wear a certain top? What makes that piece so special? Pay attention to your emotions when you are dressed. They will clue you in on your preferences!

3. Do you have a style icon? Which celebrity, athlete, relative or friend inspires you? What is it about their style that captures your attention?

4. What brand ads make you stop and look again? Which runways shows do you anxiously anticipate each spring and fall?

Once you’ve answered these questions, it may help to create a mood board to gather your thoughts and inspirations in one spot. Now, get started on reinventing your style!

The easiest place to start is with accessories. Based on your mood board and the answers to the questions above, purchase, borrow or re-purpose what you already own to create the same feel as your desired style.

A scarf can be worn in a variety of ways but if you prefer a more streamlined look, you won’t want to wear it knotted around your neck! A hat is a must-have but if you prefer a feminine style, a fedora is likely not the hat to make you feel like you are owning your individual style! Pay attention to details and how pieces are worn!

Jewelry is another accessory to look at. If you prefer a quirky kick to your individual style, try pieces that are engraved with a fun saying. If you want to go glam, look to the gemstones for color and bling! If you prefer a more edgy look, invest in pieces that are unique and imperfect!

Here is Challenge #6:

2012 is almost upon us. What does the future hold for the world of fashion? That will depend on people like you. It’s time to take a long hard look at yourself and the world around you. What do you see & how does it make you feel? The ability to be inspired by everyday life is an essential skill. The ability to translate your inspiration into something fresh and unexpected that takes the fashion world by storm is a rare gift. Rumor has it that one of the most coveted designer bags of all time was inspired by a roll of tape.

Find the bag of pretzels in your trunk. Get inspired and create something that will amaze me. Post a photo to your blog and write an entry explaining your design.

I asked my friend, who happens to be an amazing jewelry designer, to toss some inspiration my way. Lisa from Studio Jewel shared a few of her pieces with me that are truly inspired by the shapes of the pretzel I received. (I doubt Lisa sat down to make these pieces after munching on pretzels but you never know…)

Since I am not a jewelry designer, I took inspiration from her designs to make a fun pair of bar earrings. I opted for brightly colored ones that will be super fun to wear in spring and summer!

The rectangle snaps are the perfect inspiration for an earring holder, which I so desperately need!

I was also inspired by the mini twists! I keep seeing this adorable face in it! Ladies and gentleman, I’d like to introduce the next big thing in pre-teen wardrobes: TIG!

Do you see the cute little face? I predict TIG will be all over tees, key chains and totes! So cute! Remember, this is a proto-type. In fashion, there are proto-types before the product is sold. It’s time to celebrate! I’ve moved on to the next challenge in the Jane By Design Blogger Challenge! Thanks for your support with comments on Facebook!

Here is task # 3, straight from Gray Chandler Murray of Donovan Decker:

Find the purse in your trunk. Look at it. I often say you can judge a person based on the purse they carry. A sloppy bag shows the world that you are a disheveled mess, very likely in need of group therapy. A matronly purse says you are uptight, humorless and quite possibly spending your nights alone, with only your cat for company. But the right bag represents you better than any other accessory can. The right bag reveals the best aspects of your personality, winning you affection and admiration wherever you go.

Now go to your closet. Find the purse that best represents you. Post a photo to your blog and tell your readers why this purse conveys the very essence of who you are.

And remember—choose carefully. An expensive purse might reveal that you are really just a shallow tart. A cheap purse might reveal that you are a miserly malcontent. To make it to the next phase of the interview process, you will need to convince me that you are an interesting person with a unique point of view. If you’re just another sheep following the masses, you’ll stay in the barnyard where you belong.

This assignment was easy. But hard.  It was hard to decide but it could have been most of the handbags I own. I have so many purses that I feel “convey the very essence of who I am.” (Guess I should donate the ones that didn’t make this cut to Dress for Success!) I am a lot of things, have many interests and enjoy a variety of looks.  In the end, the winning handbag had 2 qualities that are at the very essence of who I am…

My red satchel, purchased at Shop Suey Boutique about a year ago, features a fabulous deep berry red and edgy details that keep it interesting.  You know that I think red is an empowering color.  If you can wear red, you’ve got confidence!  For me, this is the perfect shade of red, reminding me of sweet summer berries.  It provides a pop of color to my normally neutral wardrobe selection and makes me smile to glance down and see it draped across my arm. It’s all about the details in life and enjoying your handbag is an important detail not to be missed!

The hardware and tassels say, “I’ve got personality” and “I like for you to notice me but I’m not all about the bling”.  It’s just enough to make you stop and notice, pass on a nice compliment and wish you could own it too!

The size is large enough for the essential wallet, makeup bag, phone and an item or two that I always end up carrying about for the kids. It’s actually good that it’s not larger because if it was, I’d be carrying way too much stuff (if there’s room in the handbag, it gets filled!).

Does it look familiar? It’s a Balenciaga-inspired bag that retailed for a fraction of the price of the name brand. I’m practical (most of the time) when I buy fashion accessories but I’m worth nice looking pieces. This handbag represents that and I’m never denied a compliment when I carry it. It’s fabulous!
