Preppy is back…well, not that it every really left.  But spring seems to bring back the preppy basics in a big way!  When else do you see nautical strips, boat shoes and white pants cuffed to perfection (yes, all worn together!).  Maybe you have memories of turned up polo shirt collars or cable crew-neck sweaters carefully tied over your shoulders, I know I do.  Preppy was big back in the 80′s when I attended high school and I attempted to be one of them (though none of us went to private schools or had names like Biffy).

In case you’ve forgotten or want to know, here are some hard set rules to preppy style, quoted from the book, “True Prep” by Lisa Birnbach.  Of the many fashion rules, these are my favorite, either because I believe them too or because they are just funny:

• We wear sportswear. This is because it is easier to go from sporting events to special events (not that there is much difference) without changing.
• We generally underdress. We prefer it to overdressing.
• Your underwear must not show. Wear a nude-colored strapless bra. Pull up your pants. Wear  belt. Do something! Use a tie!
• We do not display our wit through T-shirt slogans.
• Every single on of us- no matter the age or the gender or sexual preference- owns a blue blazer.
• Bags and shoes need not match
• Jewelry should noy match, though metals should
• High Heel rule: You must be able to run in them- on cobblestones, on a dock- in case of spontaneous footrace.
• Every preppy woman has a friend who is a jewelry designer.
• Sweat suits are for sweating.

When you get ready for an evening out, what handbag do you grab? Hopefully you have some fabulous leather handbags, or a clutch, like Elizabeth Olsen (above) for your essentials. If you don’t have one, get one, holiday parties are just around the corner! Once you have a clutch, it has to be carefully packed because space is minimal, at best!

These are the evening essentials you’ll need:

Card Holder- get a flat one without any bling. It’s perfect for your ID and debt card or cash!

Blotting Papers- No matter what, bring your blotting tissues! Tatcha recently released “Evening Aburatorigami” which is “perfectly sized to slip into the sleekest of clutches, for night perfect skin.” Through the “secret ingredient”, charcoal, these mini blotting papers remove excess oil and I promise, it won’t leave a residue on your skin!

Thanks to the DKNY Golden Moment campaign, in honor of the new Golden Delicious fragrance, my family enjoyed a spectacular weekend at Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage, California. Can I just say that it was a wonderful experience? The service is top notch, the grounds are beautiful and the pool area is perfect for kiddos of all ages thanks to the lazy river, water slides and Splashtopia area!

The weekend came at a good time. It was my husband’s and my 16th anniversary and the day after Fashion’s Night Out. I was ready for the getaway and time to relax! While a weekend with just my husband would have been ideal, we have yet to leave my daughter, who requires insulin 4x/day.

Details that made our trip special:
Rancho Las Palmas generously supplied a refrigerator for my daughter’s insulin (we didn’t know that was an option at hotels, learning as we go…), they had yummy chipotle chicken sandwiches, margaritas and snow cones (afternoon refreshments for all!), plus they had the best smelling mango lotion in the bathroom. It’s all about the details, right??  RLP is very family friendly but also has an adult-only pool, spa and golf available for grown-up activities!

Here is a glimpse at our time at Rancho Las Palmas poolside:

Night swimming was a favorite activity for the kids. Larry and I relaxed on the lounge chairs and enjoyed the uninterrupted conversation, shooting stars and the moon!

Even DKNY Golden Delicious came to the poolside! In fact, here is a look at Rancho Las Palmas on a tour with my bottle of Golden Delicious! (thanks to my hubby who walked the grounds and took these pictures before the rest of us even got up in the morning!)

There are 3 kinds of bars that I like:
