Given that it’s spring, I’m thinking it’s time to do something about this:

Scary, isn’t it? It’s my closet and it’s in need of some attention! There are two huge disadvantages things to having my closet in this kind of shape:

  1. I forget which cute shoes I have! Literally! I came across a pair of shoes recently that I completely forgot about! They are cute, I like to wear them and are one of the most comfortable heels I own.  I was able to wear them on Easter Sunday, it was like wearing a new pair!
  2. All my clothes are wrinkled! Because I hate to take the time to iron, it means a lot of clothes are left unworn.  I wear the ones that withstand wrinkles or are fresh from the laundry so I don’t have to iron.  Another way to get around ironing is to put the pieces into the dryer and fluff them!  Pathetic.

It’s time to work this out!  While a customized closet with fabulous shelves or a session with a closet organizer would be a blessing, I’m on my own here!

First step: Eliminate!

This is the biggest, most important step in making my closet work.  I  have friends that I give clothing or shoes to and they gladly accept.  We also have a donation truck that comes by once a  month.  All I have to do is remember to put the donation bag in the driveaway on the correct day.  It’s such an easy way to get rid of things that others can benefit from.

Second step: Organize!

In the past when I’ve organized my closet, I’ve enjoyed having my clothes hung together by type and color. For example, all the tank tops hang together or all the black short sleeve tops hang together.  That way, if I need a black top, I can quickly scan my selection.  It saves time when I’m getting dressed!

Third step: Shoes!

My shoes are kept in their original boxes and stacked high.  While clear plastic shoe boxes would be amazing, it’s not a priority so investing in that many boxes is not happening anytime soon. Instead, taking a picture of the shoes, printing off the picture and taping it to the outside of the shoe box is a great way to organize shoes!  I can see what I have available quickly. Again, a time saver and wardrobe boost since I will have the opportunity to wear shoes I’ve forgotten about!  I have hopes that during the summer I’ll have time to do some redecorating in my office and I plan to put all my red heels on a shelving unit, which will make for a gorgeous office display and free up room in my wardrobe closet.

Taking the steps to organize and spring clean my closet will make my life run more smoothly, taking away the stress of getting dressed. It’s crazy how an organized closet can make my life healthier and more beautiful!

  1. That photo of your closet made me laugh because the bottom of it is not far off what mine looks like right now. I realized the other day i have been wearing only a couple of pairs of shoes because my closet is small and just not organized. If I really get in there and clean it out it will be like Christmas… lots of clothes and shoes begging to be worn for a change!
    Thanks for the inspiration! 🙂
