5 Looks From thredUP.com

Have you heard of thredUp.com yet? It is a resale website specializing in practically new (truly) mainstream brand apparel for kids and women (i.e. Banana Republic, Ralph Lauren, GAP, etc.) at 80% off retail. Every item undergoes a 12-point inspection process by expert consignors, and only items in Practically New condition pass the test and are resold online (for a fraction of the original price!). I was asked to select a few outfits from thredUp.com and experience the thrill of name brand clothing at “makes-me-happy” prices. I’m not crazy so, of course, I said YES! Here are my selections:

The top picture is a gray wrap dress with the bonus of sequence on the shoulder. It is from Tinely Road. It’s a fun casual dress with a touch of bling, perfect for summer. What could be better?  I paired it with Sam Edelman wedge sandals from Shopbop and a large ring. The cost of the dress on thredUp was $27.99 (original price, $71). It was new with tags.

This dress is by Ab Studio. It was brand new and still had the tags on when I received it. It was listed under “casual dresses” so I was surprised that the lower half is velvet. Velvet is definitely not a “casual” fabric. This will be a fun cool weather evening dress. The top portion gives a bit of funkiness to the style. I paired it with Twisted Silver’s Princess Rocker necklace and bracelet, along with open-toe booties to help the look be more edgy fun. However, the dress could easily be paired with pumps and pearls. The cost of the dress on thredUp was $24.49 (original price, $59). It was new with tags.

This beauty is a Diane von Furstenberg silk dress! The layers of silk are elegant. It makes for a great cocktail dress any time of the year! I paired this with peep-toe Christian Siriano for Payless (wow, talk about mixing high/low cost pieces!) and Twisted Silver’s Eclection necklace (due out 7/30/13) ). The cost of the dress on thredUp was $42.49. Original price, $285.

The look of a leather pencil skirt is luxurious and sexy. While you could easily spend hundreds on a leather skirt, this BCBG Max Azria one only cost $32.49 on thredUp (original price, $348)! I admit, I thought it was black when selecting it and probably wouldn’t have given it a second thought if I had realized it was brown. However, I think it is a nice addition to my wardrobe. I paired it with a cream Soft Joie Clelia cowl neck top from Shopbop, Twisted Silver Eureka Earrings and red Nine West pumps.

This Suva dress is super fun! The city-scape design is unique and great for a night out with my guy. The fit is perfect for keeping cool in the summer and I can layer it under a cardigan or short jacket when temperatures drop again. It was new with tags on and cost $35.49 on thredUp (original price, $90). I’m wearing my favorite Carlos Santana heels.

The best thing about thredUP is the savings. They have women’s clothing, shoes and accessories like scarves, hats and belts. They also have children’s clothes. You can easily find what you are shopping for with the FANTASTIC filters on the sidebar! Filter by type of clothing, color, size, price, condition and brand.

I have a couple of recommendations for thredUP after spending some time on the site (I placed two more orders of my own after being introduced to them!):

  • Offer a wish list. I would find items I liked but wasn’t 100% sure I wanted them. When I decided I did want them, I had to go back and search for them. A wishlist would have saved me tons of time. The shopping cart clears if you are gone too long.
  • List the color. I was really disappointed that the leather skirt was not black. See the image for yourself and tell me if you think the skirt is black or brown.
  • List the fabric type.  The Ab Studio Casual Dress has a velvet bottom. It was not visually clear in the image that it was velvet and as I mentioned, velvet is not a “casual” fabric. A bit more clarification in the description would reduce the amount of returns.
  • I prefer the images of clothing on mannequins. The images of clothing laying flat are not appealing and hard to determine the shape.
  • I’d love to see front and back images, especially on dresses.

Even though I’d like to see these features added, I’m still a fan of thredUP. Not only do they offer like new designer clothing at a fraction of the original cost, they offer other benefits as well:
