A new season is an opportunity to embrace a new look for your daily life. With fall, we traditionally see darker lips, warmer and darker hair tones as well as palettes filled with brown hues from chestnut to sand stone to taupe.
Fall 2016 definitely embraces all of these trends but there are some fun, surprising options if you find earthy shades a bit dull for your taste (more on this below).
I had the opportunity to enjoy a day of beauty at Montclair Place and talk to a couple of beauty experts about how we can transition our looks for fall. In this post, I will share with you Part One of my Day of Beauty at Montclair Place. Today, it’s all about fall makeup trends!
I was thrilled to be invited to spend some time with Nicole at MAC. She skillfully walked me through a look as she applied the makeup. She explained each product, its benefits and how to properly use them. She shared with me which brush she used to apply the product and why. It was a very educational time and I felt like I learned a lot from her even though I have been applying and wearing makeup for 30+ years (never too old to learn, right?!). You can expect the same treatment if you book an appointment and go in for a one-on-one application and lesson.
Here is the look Nicole gave me for fall:
Eyes: Diffused shadow is a beautiful fall makeup trend if you want a softer eye for day. The shadow is applied with a Duo Fibre Eye Shadow Brush that is brilliant at blending out the color. There are no defined lines in this shadow application, every color is blended with the next for an overall blurred effect.
After applying Painterly Pro Longwear Paint Pot as an eye shadow primer over my entire lid, Nicole expertly layered and blended 3 shadow colors: Soft Brown eye shadow, Brown Script eye shadow and the gorgeous “The Naked Time” Pressed Pigment Eye Shadow from the Star Trek collection. My eye is lined with Eye Kohl in Costa Riche and my lashes are coated with layers of mascara! Bold yet soft. A contrast that works so perfectly for fall. I love how the browns make my blue eyes stand out!
Cheeks: Given that contouring is still a popular practice, Nicole used the gorgeous Trip the Light Fantastic Powder in Luna Luster to highlight my cheeks, applying to the top of my cheek bones and anywhere on my face that the light would hit if I was standing in a spotlight. (It is so pretty! It’s on my must-have list! See below.) The Trip the Light Fantastic Powder in Highly Illogical was used to define my cheeks by going below my cheek bone. Finally, Trip the Light Fantastic Powder in Strange New World was used for the color on the apples of my cheeks.
Lips: For the day look, Nicole used Lip Pencil in Hover. She recommends going 3 shades darker with your lip pencil when wearing a neutral lip color to give your lips some contrast and definition. My lip color is The Enemy Within (a beautiful gold shimmer) from the Star Trek collection, topped with Lipglass in Pleasure Planet. These three products are also on my fall beauty wish list!
For the Night Look, Nicole changed my makeup only slightly but it made a dramatic impact on my overall look. To my eyes, she added a dark brown hue to the creases of my eyes, as well as the outer corner. For my lips, she applied a beautiful red for fall.
She proved to me that freshening up for the evening didn’t involve a redo of makeup, just a couple of simple changes will make a striking difference.
Let’s talk about this red lip. I’m not great at getting a red lip right. It’s tricky to find the right shade for your skin tone that doesn’t also bring out the coffee stains on your teeth. This gorgeous Viva Glam 1 Lipstick is a brownish blue-red so it is not too bright and the blue reduces the risk of your teeth looking yellow! BONUS: 100% of the selling price of any Viva Glam Lipstick is donated to the M.A.C. Aids Fund! (Yep, this one is on my fall wish list too!)
My lips are lined with the Lip Pencil in Mahogany and filled with Viva Glam 1.
