Brief Description of Your Business: The Organized Parent is an online boutique that offers stylish and smart products for busy moms.
When do you make time to run a business with your busy MOM schedule? My boys are 12 and 8, so I work while they are in school. During the summer, I’m able to work around their schedules, and the flexibility of working for myself means I can take days off for fun family time.
What is your favorite beauty tip? My Grandma Lorraine was definitely a mom in red high heels in her day. When she died, we found a letter she had received from ‘50s Hollywood costume designer Edith Head, whom she had written asking for fashion advice. My favorite part of the letter says this: “Never let your clothes detract from you. Let them be a background for your personality. Any dress that you notice before you notice the wearer is not a good dress. It should always be subordinate to you.” I have the letter framed and hanging in my powder room with some photos of my Grandma Lorraine (swim suit shots!!!)
What did your mother teach you about beauty and fashion? Stick with classics and your look will be timeless.
What beauty/fashion tips will you be sure to share with your daughter, niece or neighbor girl as she grows? Be true to who you are and never follow a trend that doesn’t reflect your style.
What is your favorite outfit in your closet and why? A ribbed turtleneck and trouser jeans. I have several sleeveless turtlenecks I wear during the summer.
What’s your favorite online site to shop for beauty or fashion? I was confessing my lack of fashion confidence to my haute couture friend Alesa one day and she told me that my style was Ann Taylor with a splash of Banana Republic. She’s right and I like to check out both stores’ websites for clothing and inspiration.
What motivates you to look your best? My husband. I’m not a shopper, but he encourages me to buy new outfits and dress well.
As a mom, “Me Time” is limited… what are your time saving beauty tips? I love Bobbi Brown stick foundation. It’s a concealer and a foundation in one.
Name one product you can’t live without: My Bobbi Brown foundation and my Solumbra Facial moisturizer, which my dermatologist recommended and keeps my skin moisturized and protected from the sun (light, non-greasy moisturizer with SPF 30 and zinc oxide).
Heels or flats? Describe your favorite pair. Flats for every day, but heels for fun. My favorite heels are my red high heels; they have a strappy around-the-toe style!!
Lip gloss or Lip Stick? Which brand/color? I actually use a lip pencil, Bobbi Brown in Brownie Pink, and fill my lips in with it. It lasts all day, gives a nice matte finish and doesn’t leave marks on glasses (or cheeks!)
