    Back Pocket Blues

    By Tammy | October 6, 2007

Oh Mama, did you see your backside today?? You have lumps, bumps and bunches! No, it’sback_pockets.jpg not cellulite! It’s your pockets!

Why do apparel makers continue to put back pockets on women’s clothing? We don’t carry wallets in our pants. We don’t want to draw attention to our bottoms with pocket flaps that always flip out, even when you take care to iron them down! And most of all, we don’t want to ADD bulk to our bottoms!

Be cautious when purchasing pants or skirts that have back pockets. You make an effort to wear seamless panties or thongs so you don’t have a VPL (visible pantie line) but did you stop to consider that even flat pockets, without the flaps, can add unpleasant lines to your bum?

If you simply MUST have the pair of pants with back pockets, my solution is to take them toback_pockets2.jpg the dry cleaners and have the seamstress cut the interior fabric out of the pockets. (Those more handy with a needle and thread can do the same at home.) Removing the bulk of the pocket fabric keeps your bottom smooth and unwelcome attention off of it.

Looking your best means paying attention to the details, ladies… including what is only seen when you are walking away!

back_pockets_brown.gifEditors note: Patch pockets do not qualify for this entry. I am referring to pockets with flap pockets (like the gray pants above) and pockets with interior fabric (like the brown pants to the left).

I disagree. I’ve always thought that pants and jeans without pockets were a major fashion faux pas - especially if you’re trying to minimize the bottom area. I understand that bulky pockets might not be the most flattering, but a well-placed pocket is an important feature in my book.

Thanks for your comment! I do need to add a P.S….Patch pockets are a different game!

I just get really annoyed with all the bulky interior fabric of back pockets. Those that are a patch pocket don’t qualify for this entry :)

Hi Tammy. I think back pockets are cute but they drive me crazy when I get them out of the dryer and the corners stick up no matter how much I iron them down. So I sew them closed. But I never thought of cutting out the interior fabric of the pocket, good tip.
